Remote oil filter question

I've looked into installing a dual remote oil filter on one of my cars. All of the installation kits use standard Fram PH8A (or equivalent) oil filters, regardless of what oil filter the car normally uses. How is it possible to use a filter that is completely incorrect for a vehicle safely in this type of application? Common sense says the filter would have to be the same spec as the oil filter the car normally uses.
 
Part of the OEM oil filter spec is for the physical size of the filter can and the thread diameter and pitch. These can be ignored with the remote mount.

Other parts of the spec relate to the presence of an internal bypass valve, backflow (anti drainback) valve, and the rate of flow of the filter. The actual filtration capability is usually about the same across the board.

Permacool also sells one for Chevy filters. Naturally, if I was of the notion that I don't need a bypass like many Chevy owners, I'd prefer they remain in ignorance about the availability of the Chevy mount.

The dual thing makes it rough, but the Spectre remote oil system allows you to retain your OEM filter on a remote mount. In fact, you can make any thread filter (pretty much) work. This can reduce part numbers if you have different filters on two vehicles.

Generically speaking, filters aren't rocket science. Euro's typically need the higher bypass/reinforced media ..but few owners are going to alter higher tech mechanicals anyway. Your common passenger car could usually care less.
 
You need a bypass valve if the filter media actually plugs, the bypass valve opens and allows unfiltered oil to the engine. Better than no oil at all. A filter will also go into bypass on very cold days when you first start the vehicle, because the oil is to thick to go thru the filter at the oil pumps flow rate. On some oil pump designs, flow rate increases with rpm and can cause the filter to go into bypass at very high rpm. If flow rate exceeds the bypass valve opening pressure.

Aside from loading ..the bypass protect the engine from starvation of oil. It's needed because you have to have a pressure relief on your oil pump.

Long story short, the bypass valve prevents oil starvation when your pump is in relief. The bypass setting protects the media.

If you're not in pump relief (which is when it's cold or when you're flat shifting at upper rpms) then you probably don't need one except (maybe) for the brief time that it takes to envelope the internals of the engine and produce "back pressure".

With the in block bypass defeated you could be driving around with breached media and be totally ignorant of it. In a worst case scenario you grab an Ecore with a plastic cage and have the media turn into a sail crushing it and clogging your oil outlet.

There is no upside to this practice that doesn't get trumped by potential liabilities. No one has yet to defend this practice nor a clue of who came up with it and why.

As I offered, it's not like Ford and Mopar are grenading due to not being able to do this.

Chevy man,yes. Ever plugged a bypass,nope.
