Remember the 10k Cavalier?

A while back I posted about the crazy prices of used cars, and had used a 10k used cavalier as an example. Well, I ran into that person who bought it this morning.

The lady and I were coming out at the same time out of Kroger, and she was just a few spots down from me. As I passed her car, I saw the dealer plate cover, and remembered that thread! I asked her if she liked her car, talked to her a few minutes, and finally asked her how much she paid. "Oh, like ten grand or so."

"They told me it was one of the few cars that I could afford. Payments are pretty good...only 196/month for 72 months!" Ouch!

Will end up being like 14k paid for a car worth nearly a third of that...I have to say, she was a very sweet lady though!


Good news...she must have a brother who is a BITOG member looking out for her. " My brother changed some fluids to synthetic, and put new coolant in, and is helping me take my car to get some Defender tires next week...he wants this car to last a long time!" Yeah, I'm thinking so! Glad she has someone looking out for her.

So.. She just ended up paying for a used cavalier what a new one would have went for... shake my head. Well I hope she get's a lot of usable life out of it.

What was the year and mileage at purchase? And when did she buy it? I'm trying to wrap my head around the $10K based on price after incentives, tax, etc. of say, a Cruze today.

It is really sad how many people get taken advantage of when buying a car. But if you have crummy credit then you just have to pay the high interest rates or pay cash. And I can think of a lot of worse things to do than buy a car that is cheap to maintain, doesn't use much gas, and is cheap to insure. If that cavalier has a 2.2 ecotec then it could out live most other cars on the road...easily.

Used car prices are outrageous. A lot of people are just ill informed that used cars are the same price as, or often more expensive than equivalent used cars.

My kid bought a 98 Cavalier with about 103,000 miles on it last August for $1800. Put about another $400-500 into it for tires, brake parts, tags, etc. It's a nice little car, runs fine, has cold a/c and stereo...she's happy with it and it's paid for. Nice used cars can be found for not too much money.

I don't get the connection. Nick didn't buy a 9 year old car and pay what it cost new in 2004.

The lady spent $10K on a Cavalier - she has a car to show for it...overpriced, sure, but a car.

Nick bought a couple new cars in a year...trading one in for the other, and in the process eating at least $10K in depreciation over those transactions....with nothing to show for that loss...

At least she has a car.

But Nick is publicly criticizing her financial and automotive acumen...reminding me of the old adage, "Those who live in glass houses should not cast stones".

Life is too short to concern ourselves what a stranger paid for a used car. If she's happy with her 10,000 mile Cavalier, thats all that matters to her.

I made a stupid mistake buying a new car...I have since gotten rid of it and will never do it again. And yes, I will criticize anyone stupid enough to pay $10,000 for a $2000 car! She shouldn't be allowed to breed!

I paid $3000 for a Jaguar xj8 Vandan Plas last year and drove it 40,000 miles before trading it in for the Fiat. The dealer paid 1000 for the car, and since it had a few problems which I decided not to fix, I basically drove around in true class for $2000. At Jag dealers I've seen similar cars go for 10,000 and some of the higher class still flip out the extra dollar to buy at a Jag dealer. It must be the buying experience, I can understand.
