Remaining Fuel when your vehicle shows “E”

It's ridiculous that my old yukon and sierra can show me fuel used as a number and i can reset that independently of trip 1 and 2 but these new crap cars with these giant screens and such can't. GM in all their wisdom removed that wonderful lovely feature on my 2021 which doesn't let me track fuel used which i wouldn't have imagined would be a missing feature because it's so wonderful. Any electronic fuel injection vehicle can track its fuel usage and very accurately.

I'm never without gas as it's very accurate so if it says 27.2 gallons used I won't worry as I have 31 minus 1-2 for sloshing margin so I can drive for another 25 miles with no fear. If i fill up to the click it's within +/- 0.2 at worst usually 0.1

On most of the vehicles I've had with fuel lights, there have been at least 2 gallons remaining when the light came on based on fuel capacity and amount required to fill.

Filled up the Sienna Hybrid this weekend with 10 miles until E and it took ~15 gallons. Supposedly has an 18 gallon tank. The Malibu takes ~13 gallons on E with hardly no miles left and supposedly has a 15 gallon tank. Tons of cushion with both.

During the automotive Jurrasic Period when I was a proto driver I had a euro model VW beetle. It had no fuel gauge but instead a fuel dipstick for the tank. It also had a foot mounted lever to switch the tank to reserve which provided a few more liters of fuel. Really it just diverted the fuel pickup to a lower point in the tank. The driver had to do some quick mental calculations to determine his level of range anxiety.

My Corvette has a fuel used display but sadly it is quite inaccurate. It’s 7% optimistic. I have a 70L tank but I certainly could never drive on a full tank until I saw that display show me that I have used 70L. I would run out of fuel when it said around 65L used 🫤 I wish there was a way to recalibrate that 🤔

very often when I am driving long distances I take the DTE down to 0 miles. The 2014 T&C will still have ~3 gallons. Most I have ever added was 2 gallons on my way to Florida in 2024. The advertise fuel capacity is 20 gallons. I was like o_O

My 1211 BMW R1200R Motorcycle ran BONE DRY with 27 miles to empty showing.

They eliminated the whole fuel gauge for a few years as they could never get the fuel strip sensor to work right or stop failing. I had 5 Fuel strips replaced under warranty

My Prius Prime advertises 11.4 gallons but I've only gotten ten in, and recently got nine gallons in when it claimed 11 remaining miles. This includes the 1.2 gallons I can "burp" in after it first clicks off. I suspect there's still air space in the tank even after "burping" as they want to protect their EVAP system.

I go this low when I have some battery power reserve, in case it runs out. It's not a habit but with a 114-mile R/T commute I can squeeze in "one extra day" by going real low occasionally.

About the only time I go below 1/4 tank is if I am trying to get southern states diesel out of my tank during late fall & winter and refill with cold weather treated fuel. In those cases I have put 25.5 gallons in a 24 gallon tank if I wait a few moments after the pump clicks off then resume pumping slowly. I'm guessing GM factors in diesel foaming with stated capacity?
