Refunding an Ebay purchase paid with gift card???

I have something that I bought on Ebay and paid for in full with an Ebay digital gift card. Now I'm looking for a refund. No problem from the seller, but they are saying they can't refund me the money via Paypal for some reason. My guess is because it was paid for via a gift card. IMO, seller is not trying to skirt the refund, they quickly offered to send me the cash via Paypal - but in that case I'll have to pay the fee (I have a sellers account or whatever you need to receive payment for stuff sold on Ebay).

Anyone been the buyer or seller in the situation? Any clever ideas/ways around this?

Something sounds shady to me.

According to this post it should be refunded as a balance to your paypal account.

If you want to just take the easy route and have them send you cash just tell them to pick the friends and family option and you won't be charged the usual fee.

Been there, done that.
