Refrigerator Knocking

We have a plain and sorta old looking Frigidaire up at our ski condo that has started to make a rhythmic knocking noise when it shuts off. Seems like it doesn't do it when we first get up there and the place is sitting around 50F, then once the ambient temp gets up the knocking kicks in.
Once the fridge cycles off, after about a minute the knocking kicks in softly at maybe one per second. As it gets louder, there will be double knocking for a while, slightly different sounds but at the same frequency...then back to single knocks that slowly fade out. The whole thing takes maybe 2-3 minutes.
The fridge is still functional, but obviously this gets irritating...I tend to sleep in the living room next to the kitchen when I am up there alone (to avoid having to heat up a bedroom and also because the couch is super comfy), and this sound can definitely wake me up.

Did some googling and this is not uncommon in Frigidaires, even found some references to a repair kit that I cannot track down. I probably should call the company, but never remember to write down info on the fridge while I am up there and would not be surprised to be told the thing is just old and to replace it. We bought the condo about 9 years ago and it was already there, the kitchen had been updated recently but I think the fridge was not changed at that time. I'm not especially inclined to buy a new one without trying a repair because the thing still works, we aren't up at the condo that often, and the thing is also so wedged into its spot that I think I will have to remove trim to get it out and it will probably scratch the crud out of the walls. I guess it's likely I'll have to move the thing to try a repair, anyway, although I am holding out hope that I can do it from the bottom. I have never taken a fridge apart and don't really know jack about their mechanical layout.

Anybody dealt successfully with an issue like this?

My old GE refrigerator started making an intermittent buzzing sort of sound. When I investigated I found a piece of paper had fallen under the refrigerator and gotten sucked up toward the fan area and was starting to hit the condenser fan blades. Sometimes it's the little things.

Usually noise like that means that the suspension for the compressor motor inside the housing has failed. That doesn't mean that it can't go like that for a long time though, I had a freezer that did that for 17 years. If that's what's wrong with yours there isn't any fix for it except a new compressor.

+1

check condenser fan. OTW forget about it until it burns the place down

May be refrigerant liquid changing state with bubbles (pockets) moving through the piping.

I the unit OFF typically then ON when you visit? That is not good for unit life.

We never shut the fridge down, we do leave food in there while we're gone and I'm sure it's not running an awful lot with the condo sitting around 50F, anyway. We do shut the water heater off along with the water itself whenever we leave.
I know that at least one of the neighbors totally shuts his heat off when he's away, was trying to monitor our propane usage and his meter was mislabeled as ours. Could not understand why our meter showed zero usage when I could hear our heater running...anyway, that explained why he had a pipe burst after several nights of -25F in a row before he showed up to ski and every other unit was fine. Maybe he's dumb enough to only run electric heat while he's gone, but I suspect he's just a rude jerk who turns his heat off in violation of the covenants and common sense and causes major issues for other people's property as a result.
Same guy had his water heater completely go while he was gone, what a shock...everybody else replaces their units before they get that shot or has a non-metallic tank.

My eighteen year old Whirlpool has been doing that for over two years and still works fine. I had thought that the compressor motor would finally break the electrical and/or refrigerant line and that would be that. Wife has picked out next frig but not in any hurry to replace old clunky.

It's really the irritation factor that's motivating me to find a fix, kind of sucks to have my sleep interrupted when I'm planning to get up at 6:45am to be in line to ski at 8. It's also near my daughter's bedroom and she has complained, not sure if it has woken her up yet. Also sucks to be watching a movie in the living room and hear clunk clunk right when the tension is building up. Like I mentioned, all the internal temps are fine and we're not noticing any more power usage in the condo.
If I need to pull the thing out to repair it, maybe I will just find a cheap replacement...ideally, something an inch or two narrower so it isn't so crammed in there.

If it happens we'll after it shuts off why do people keep saying it's the fan or compressor???

My refrigerator is an old roper and sometimes makes a knocking sound when off I've even thought it was someone at the door at times.

I've always attributed this to temperature and pressure changes inside causing panels and contents to expand, contract and shift. Also during the defrost cycle small pieces of ice can fall off the coil which can make a louder than expected sound. I think they all do this.

The refridge in the apartment I used to live in had that problem. Boom at the end of each cooling cycle. Landlord swapped out the fridge, later repaired a rubber grommet that supports... the compressor? a cylindrical thing, here is a googled pic..

Your best chance at isolating the problem is constant monitoring.
Perhaps share your ski condo with other Bitogers for a week or so at a time and we can give our expert opinions?

Heh...well, you pretty much missed this season. This weekend should be good after the Noreaster, but they usually shut down in early April no matter how much snow is left.
Honestly, even with free lodging, I wouldn't come all the way here from Michigan for East Coast skiing...go West, young man! Unless you went to one of the big Maine resorts or Jay Peak, maybe. The worst resort I've been to in the West would be the king of the East...

Lots of older compressors will do that. My parents received a new Refrigerator as a wedding present in 1952. When I was in my late teens they gave it to me when I rented my first house alone, around 1980. I lived there for three years, then moved and passed the house on to a friend, who passed it on to another friend (the rent was very low). That second friend-of-a-friend lived there until he died, about 10 years ago. Sometime around 2005 or so he replaced that round cornered, tar and paper insulated, fridge.

So, it only ran for 53 years. And knocked like you describe the whole while.

What's the price of your sleep? That's the bigger issue. You are coming to relax and this is interfering, your sleep, daughters sleep. Now it is starting to get under your skin. Call A service guy and get an over the phone estimate. The other aspect is a newer refrigerator is soo much more energy efficient.

It's true that newer appliances are more energy efficient, but there is no way you can financially justify buying new to replace a working appliance on energy savings, just like there is no way you will recover the cost of a new car loan and depreciation on improved gas mileage.
