The following are the latest results from my engine oil analysis and comparison of Mobil 1 0w-40, 10w-30 and now Redline 10w-30. The first two numbers are for Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0w-40 at 5k and 10k. The third and fourth numbers are for Mobil 1 SuperSyn 10w-30 at 5k and 10k. The fifth and sixth numbers are from Redline 10w-30 at 5k and 10k. To attempt to minimize the first-run sample error caused by redlines intense cleaning action, I ran an Auto-RX treatment for 750 miles prior to putting in the redline.

The truck ('02 Toyota Tacoma) is driven with several very short trips daily as well as two or three longer highway trips every week. I live in an inland area of Southern California that rarely gets below freezing and sees Summer temps in excess of 100F.

Note: Added magnetic "SuperPlug" oil drain plug at start of 10w-30 run. Continued to use SuperPlug for Redline.

Makeup oil: Added 1/2 quart at 5k for oil filter change.

My comments on the results: The last two Redline results look questionable. There are some significant discrepanicies (like the drop in lead, spike in tin and moly) that make me question the validity of the results. I don't feel comfortable drawing any conclusions based on this latest data.

My current fill is the German Castrol Syntec 0w-30.

As always, I look forward to your questions and comments.

Too bad you don't have a VOA for what was used at each change. That might be the only way to answer these questions. I'd love to know since I have the identical engine in my 4Runner...

The lead is disturbing at 20 with the 0w-40. It looks though as if you maybe should have kept going with RL because the numbers started to come down, other then copper. RL isn't as shear stable as I thought. Mobil 1 did as well over all.

the second interval with Mobil1 0w-40 shows noticeably worse wear pattern, but silicon also spiked in that interval and its the only interval where you got chrome to show up - rings. I think there was a dirt/air filter problem in that interval that lead to poorer numbers. Mobil1 looked good overall IMO. Redline was decent , I dont think it was any better than Mobil1 though.

I agree to investigate the funky Si numbers...and yeah, I think the SuperPlug dramatically skewed the wear numbers...eg. Fe by pulling them out of suspension....

That lead dropoff definitely is strange, and the problem is now you don't know if it is the correct one or not. Perhaps the first lead number was erroneously high? I lean towards this explanation, since the other wear numbers are so low on the 10k sample that it's lead number is totally believeable.

And yes the Iron is probably affected by the magnet. I wonder if you can call them and check the funky lead and Moly numbers. I have had a report where the report they sent me was in error. The typist I believe copies the numbers on the report sent out from the origional data.

Worth a try.
