Thanks, All! First time posting my UOAs for my 2021 RAM 1500 with a non eTorque 5.7L HEMI. I'd love some feedback on the results. Thanks!
Backstory and observations: Bought the truck a little over a year ago with roughly 21,000 miles from the original owner—wanted a non eTorque HEMI so it took some searching but eventually found one I liked two states away. Looked like he’d maintained it with regular oil changes via a local Jiffy Lube. Truck was in good condition. Drove the truck home and dropped the dealer-filled 5w-20 oil and no-name filter with around 1,400 miles on it (happy to post the UOA on that if that’s helpful) and replaced it in favor of Redline 5W-30 after I noticed two things: 1.) sometimes I’d get valvetrain noise on cold starts and some hot starts if I didn’t drive the truck, just started and moved it…sounded like one or more of the lifters would bleed down 2.) when hot, one of the front cylinders on the passenger side just seemed to have more lifter noise than I’d prefer. Specifically, more noise when running, and on the overrev it would almost seem rattley (that’s a technical term, lol).
I’d read on the Ram forums that many people had luck quieting the lifter tick on the 5.7L HEMIs by switching to Redline 5w-30, so I did, and with a standard WIX filter too. The change helped the lifter tick when hot by a large margin and cut the valvetrain noise during cold starts and some hot starts (if I started the truck and moved it around the block without driving it) by an equally impressive amount, but I was curious if I could quiet it even more.
I ran the Redline/WIX combo for just under a year and after some research decided to add HPL PCMO 0w-20 and a FRAM Synthetic Endurance filter. Initial impressions were an even quieter engine, even less valvetrain noise when hot and even less valvetrain noise on hot and cold starts (it still sometimes happens, just a little less often now). I’ll post that UOA when I drop it. In the meantime, how do you think the Redline 5w-30/WIX combo did? I'm not opposed to returning to this combo if it did really well.
Maintenance, Care and & Typical Driving Conditions: We live about 30 miles outside San Francisco. I’m beyond picky with the truck, driving it easy when cold (always watching oil temps), running 91-octane gas (Safeway (non Top-Tier) and Shell (Top Tier), but when the oil is warm I do enjoying giving it some WOT once or twice a month, sometimes more, but never being abusive.
I drive about 8-10 miles to work (depends on my route) with 60% being highway, 20% city, 20% country roads. Oil temps typically get to 200 degrees by the last couple of miles to work if I take the freeway route and if I take more backroads, they hit 200 degrees about halfway there. The truck sees some more extended highway use once a week or once every couple of weeks to destinations 30 miles or so away.
This OCI I didn’t do any towing but did have a 2000 mile trip a couple of states away with the rest of the miles being commuting and daily stuff.
Typical Commute Conditions: I go about 2 miles down a country road before climbing up a steep on-ramp onto the freeway, at which point it’s pretty much down-hill-to-mostly flat all the way to work. On the way home, city streets for roughly 4 miles, then climbing up a ramp to the freeway and mostly flat all the way home. *Sometimes I’ll take backroads, which are roughly 5 miles city streets and 5 miles country roads.
