redline 15w40

i am driving a 99 suburban w/ 6.5 turbo diesel it has had redline 15w40 in it since about the 20k kms i want to change the brand because in canada i pay on avg $13-16 per litre need some recomendations Mobil 1 5w40 syn was recomended but no sure about the 5w instead of 15w
i have been reading about the catagory of oils 4 or 5 or somthing like that does it make a difference?

What do you want out of your oil? Extended drains? You live in Vancouver (I grew up in the Lower Mainland, you don't need synthetic for cold/heat there)?
Just offhand, I would run any of the most commonly found at Walmart (Rotella, Tection/Hypuron, Esso XD3 15W40), I'm sure the price would agree with you more.

The 5W-40's will allow the engine to crank more freely when it's really cold. Up where you are I would certainly consider a synthetic in 5W-40 at least in the cold part of the year.

Xd3 as mentioned would be an excellent choice. Also I would shop around I can get redline for 9.95/liter. Still pricey but it's a great oil and we live in the land of expensive oils.

You don't need a syn oil for the climate in Vancouver but if you want a syn oil for a bit less money you could go with Mobil 1 5w40, Rotella T Synthetic 5w40, XD3, Delo 5w40. Pretty much any of the off-the-shelf 5w40's will work great and will be less expensive than the RedLine.

The other oils will be mostly group III base oil offerings and not as good as RedLine ester base oils. However I think the regular 5w40 offerings will be great in your 6.5, it's pretty easy on oil.

There is no TEMPERATURE reason to run a synthetic at all in Vancouver. The average low is 32 deg F; the high is 71 deg F. That's not extreme by anyone's measure. Here, a 15w40 would suffice admirably. Prehaps if you were to regularly venture off to the north country, it might make some difference, but you didn't mention it, so I'll not consider it here. And by "regularly ... venture north ..." I mean weekly; not a once-a-year vacation.

If extended drain intervals are of interest, then a lower cost group III like RTS would do well for you. It typically performs with the group IV's and V's UOA wise for a lot less money.

But, if you're not going to extend drain intervals, and the temps are obviously not a concern, then synthetics are a waste. I urge you to reconsider your commitment to synthetics; today's dino HDEO's are awesome products. D-Roc has made some excellent suggestion here.

The 6.5L Chev Diesel will break down for many other reasons long before it will break down from an oil related reason. The top end will be replaced 4 times before anything related to lubrication is worn out. Use whatever is cheap and meets the basic requirements of the engine.
