Looking for suggestions for a Suburban 6.5 TD

A friend has a '97 Chev. Suburban 4wd with the 6.5 TD. He has been using Mobil 1 15w50 for cold starting and from a recommendation to use 15w40 for the turbo. He doesn't run it hard and is not used as his daily commuter. I was looking at Rotella T Syn 5w-40 year-round for protection, starting, price, and Walmart availablility. What are your suggestions?

Mobil 1 15w-50 is more or less a passenger car oil. I don't believe it's a good choice for a modern turbo diesel engine.

You have the right idea with the Rotella-T 5w-40.
