Redline 0w40 or 0w30 in BMW ?

0w-40, alternatively their 5w30. Their 0w30 does not have high enough HTHS.
Red Line 5w30.

The 5w-40 has an HTHS that may be unnecessarily high for your application and will just kill your fuel economy. I'd go for either the 0w-40 or the 5w30.

I wouldnt worry about any of those so long as they were the high hths versions. The 30wt would likely suffice in an NA engine though.

Neither while you are under factory warranty. After warranty 5w30.
Aside from warranty issues etc, I'd choice the Red Line 0W-30.
Yes this oil is initially lighter than the spec' Castrol made BMW 5w30 but unlike the GP III based BMW oil it doesn't shear.
In service there will be very little hot operational viscosity difference. Of course the Red Line oil due to it's high 183 VI will be lighter on start-up at all temp's which is a good thing.

Anyone have any thoughts on Pentospeed 0w30 VS? I use that in my absolutely flawless 2003 330Ci. The Pentospeed is an A3/B3, A3/B4, BMW LL-01 certified oil (though I do short OCIs).
Personal experience comment regarding Redline 5w-40. I like Redline products but used this in my wife's 2006 C230 Sport. The engine felt noticably sluggish when cold. Now using PU Ultra 5w-40, which is much lighter at operating temps. I used the heavier oil in the Merc because of the balance shaft gear problems the M272 motor has. Our is in the problem range, but 97K miles and still no problem. Fingers crossed as it's a $5K repair job.

Red Line recommends dropping a grade when switching to their 5W or heavier oils and their 5W-40 is a good example of why one should. With a HTHSV of 4.6cP it's more typical of a heavy 50wt oil. It's also a deisel oil and therefore doesn't contain the usual high moly levels that Red Line PCMO do.
Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 is a much lighter oil (HTHSV 3.68cP, 180 VI), significantly lighter than even Red Line 0W-40 and 5w30.
