The correct technical term is "neopentylpolyol esters" but this is more frequently shortened to "polyol esters".

Red Line oil is expensive, but so are esters. If the company lowered their prices to suit everyone, they would quickly go out of business. Selling your products below cost would be stupid.

Red Line is needed by more than 5% of vehicles. Just look at the number of people with hot-running engines, turbochargers, and a tendency to race on the street and track. Can everyone afford Red Line? No. Nevertheless, it's amusing when fellow Americans fail to understand our culture of overkill in driving the fastest cars and babying our rides with premium products. Pinching pennies is not the only thrill in the automotive world.

I tried it this winter for it cold flow ability and I'm impressed

Is it overkill? Most likely, but I dont smoke or drink,so I doubt it'll ever break me buying oil

Specialty oil using fairly straightforward, easy-to-understand techniques (most of their oils have lots of esters, ZDDP, and moly) to achieve good performance.

They're a fairly small company (a gnat compared to Exxon Mobil and friends) with no interest in going big. None of their stuff is certified by any third party; they say they'd rather spend the money on R&D.

Yes. A good reputation, too. They are a very popular option for turbocharged, high horsepower, and sludge prone applications.

Around $2-$3 more per quart than the off-the-shelf synthetics.

Yes. But so are most oils these days, if we're honest.

Expensive is a relative term when it comes to motor oils.

As long as you can get Red Line for $10.00, or less a quart, it is not that much more than the major market "synthetic" off the shelf stuff (unless they are on some kind of CRAZY sale, of course).

Red Line is actually inexpensive when compared to some of the other 'boutique' oils out there (i.e. Motul 300V/various 8100s, Neo, Torco SR5, Silkolene/Fuchs, top tier Elf, RP Racing, etc.)

They are the only oil company I know of off hand that uses polyol ester base stocks in all of their motor oils and gear oils, all combined with an extremely stout additive package.

Motul?

Not polyol ester base stock

Yes, Motul uses polyol ester too

dailydriver, I agree with you 100%. "Expensive" is a relative term, although many people on BITOG are incapable of recognizing it. The total cost increase per oil change over an extended interval is trivial, especially compared to other living expenses.

Craig, thanks. I don't mind that frugality is popular on BITOG, since these are tough economic times, but I do mind the implied rejection of sports and luxury vehicle owners. On a site devoted to car guys (and gals), we should accept every approach.

The trick to purchasing Redline{or other boutique oils/lubricants} is to stock up when you find someone offering special pricing.....not unusual for me to purchase 6-8 cases at a time during these "specials", enough to last 3-5 years for one vehicle...I get itchy when I see my shelves with less than 4-6 cases of redline oils/atf/gear oil stocked on them!!!!

Exactly. It's also cheap compared to the cost of car insurance. In fact, I consider it a form of car insurance.

I don't mind frugality either. I go to all kinds of lengths to get the "most" out of things, DIY almost everything (car, home, appliances, whatever), fix things instead of replace them etc... I'm also a "car guy" and my car isn't simply another appliance like a hair dryer or washing machine. I want it working at it's best, and as like-new as reasonably financially possible, as I "push" from time-to-time.

Although my current budget doesn't allow for a dedicated fun car any more I would still have a car I polish UNDERNEATH and prep for concours if I could. I personally don't subscribe to either of the "whatever is on sale" or the "money is no object" camps. I'll get what I feel is best, but wait for it to go on sale :)

I am personally considering a switch to RL from GC for reasons of increased cleanliness and repeated accounts of smooth, quiet but free-revving operation. Unfortunately it's expensive here (probably about $15/L and I need 7L), I change at 6 month/~8,000km intervals and I'm not likely to extend out to 12-15,000km or so to make up the cost difference. GC is already excellent and, on sale, costs about half as much.

I don't see any problem with the price of Redline oils either, and in fact I think for a small company the price is fair to say the least. I do have a problem when comparing any type of oil with gas, insurance etc, it has no bearing on the cost of oil at all. When comparing cost of 8000 miles to the cost of an OCI it's of no value, the money spent on gas if saved would be in no way related to the length of oil change, nor the cost. It's like saying buying bottled water is perfectly fine, just think how much it cost to buy toilet paper for one week.... not picking on anyone just a pet peeve of mine when comparing non related components etc to each other...

I have never tried Redline, I hope to some day, I have a problem ordering oil, I order many things so I don't know why it's a problem when it comes to oil. The only boutique oil available to me local is Royal Purple, and if it ever goes on sale I plan to give it a try in my 02 Accord !! When it comes to money spent on any oil, when it comes down to it, I don't think any synthetic will beat conventional when comparing wear, protection, cleanliness, and most of all cost.... Conventional oils are in my opinion at every day normal prices the most bang for the buck, and even though synthetics offer more protection, it's like having something you can't use, or will never use the entire time you have it...

By the way before I get flamed away I'm running synthetic my my little 4 cylinder Accord, because I can, and choose to, I also run conventional oils as well.

I have been trying out different synthetic oils in my 2008 Tacoma 4X4 for a good while. Changing oils early, so just I could try another type to compare the differnce. I have tried out Amsoil, PP, Val.Syn Power, Castrol Synthec and Red line. I have to say that based on my personal experience, Red line is the best synthetic oil among the ones I have tried. I am very happy with it, my truck is very happy with it, and I believe it is worth every bit of higher price I paid for it. It is like everything else, you get what you paid for.

you're right, we should compare cost of oil to cost of other oil. but technically it is correct to lump these expenses into total auto expenses (it's tax time!)

i'm using PP spiked w/ LC and feel it's good enough for me, so i spend $27 instead of $55 for 5qts Redline w/ tax. I will also dump it at 5 or 6 months regardless of mileage tho cuz of all the short trips and other severe duty
