Recommended SUV to buy under $15k

I like the Highlander Hybrid, but the older ones are the V6 hybrid and only get mid 20s mpg wise. If that's acceptable then there you go.
Both the older 3.3L and the later 3.5L get 25MPG. BUT, they get that MPG aaaaaall the time. Unlike the non-hybrid vehicles with fluctuating MPG based on driving style, weather, traffic, etc... These hybrids are definitely "tuned" for power and drivability, where a Prius hybrid system for example is "tuned" purely for efficiency. But despite the extra power these Highlanders are still floaty (but very comfy) whales on the road, compared to the 2009 Pilot for example. While slower - its lower center of gravity and Honda suspension tricks make it feel a lot more manageable and happy on twisty roads, while Highlanders are waaay out of their comfort zone. Anyways, I'm getting carried away here.

From your list the Acura MDX is by far the best option, in my opinion.
The SH AWD combined with its suspension and steering make it feel and drive a lot more like a car than the ugly SUV that it is :)
You can also count on the Honda reliability with it.
It does use a timing belt which will have to be replaced every 100k miles.
It's built quality however will not be as good as the Toyota solely because it is built in Canada rather than Japan.
Fuel economy will depend on how long you stay in Vtec :) ....it could actually be pretty good.

tbh i want a 2014 acura rdx but not sure about the timing service or if the tranny is problematic, i read some about this, anyone can chime in?

Mazda CX 5 or 9: Not sure of the older ones, but the newer ones are quite nice and I don’t think I’ve heard a single complaint about them, ever. Front overbite burns my eyes.

Rav 4: I’d see this mostly as a penalty box unless it’s the latest gen. Noisy, cramped, body isnt very rigid. The newer ones are great, we own a 24.

Highlander: sweet spot in your list. They’ve never made a bad one. Interior may be a little less inspiring, but they are the perfect size and soldier along for many miles.

Pilot: well built, hardly many complaints. They seem a little mpg thirsty for their size. If that’s not an issue, keep the vents clean for the rear AC fan controller. Also, these have occasional EGR issues. I do enjoy the more classic boxy shape.

CRV: hard to go wrong with these. Noisy on the highway, great fuel economy.

MDX: competent - gen 1 was truly a solid performer. Gen 2 had some ring sealing and oil consumption issues. From what I gather, one of the better handling offerings. I just have a hard time with nose-heavy vehicles where the engine sits forward of the front axle.

RDX: I’m not sure why this would be a better option than a CRV. Just as noisy and plastic-y, but still a great build heritage. The turbo 4 could be fun but it’s not elegant with the transmission if you drive it hard.

Timing belt is very straight forward, and as far as cost to have it done an indy shop should be under $1500 including water pump. Transmission requires fresh fluid (changed every 25k or so) or else you can get shudder and slippage but it's reliable. Fluid changes are literally easier than an oil change.
