Recommended Impact Lug nut sockets?

Fighting with the Jeep lug bolts yesterday I scratched an edge using my regular HF impact sockets. I want to get some better non-marring ones also reading the DT thread with scratched wheels.

From links @Trav put for other stuff and some other members listed, these KOKEN longer ones seem nice I would just need to get a 22mm also for the Pilot. The Milwaukee ShockWave ones from HD seem to be mixed reviews with breaking them. I'm definitely not a daily tire remover so maybe not an issue.

Any other recommended ones? Current vehicles need 17, 19, 21, 22mm.

If so, why bother with impact? In almost 40 years of wrenching I've never once used an impact wrench on lug nuts. Four-way lug wrench with wheel on the ground has always been adequate. In rare cases I've had to whip out a breaker bar.

Wheels (and even lug nuts) are too pretty and fragile these days to not remove and loosen nuts by hand.

6 vehicles in fleet plus help others. Winter/summer tire change overs. Once using the impact it it's like walking, riding a bike, driving. You'll get there walking just takes longer than a bike or driving. As I get older and more stiff joints, knee surgeries the less time the better.

I think over the years I also scratched a couple by "spinning" the 4 way to get them off all the way and it hits.

I keep having a problem with my flip sockets and even regular impact sockets "sticking" after torquing with a TW. Then I have to remove TW and tap the socket with a BFH to get it off. Annoying.

I'm tempted to try the Kokens for this reason alone. But I imagine higher quality flip sockets might solve this, too

I actually prefer my extra thinwall Snap-On impact sockets (SIMMF21A) for wheels over any of the sleeved options. In most situations, getting the wheel perfectly square (on the hub) before fully tightening the fasteners will allow most sockets to not damage the wheels.

But I do own a few sets of the Koken wheel sockets and they are excellent. Amazon Japan has the best prices for them.

Most of mine has been on removal and that if I'm not holding the wheel against hub with foot.

Going on I always start by hand a couple turns and then holding wheel square still go slow to seat them all before any "impacts". Then I go around to all normally on my lowest impact setting and then finish with a torque wrench.

I have HF impact lug nut sockets. Had them for years. One of the protective sleeves has a crack but it stays on anyway.

The 7 piece HF set is now $50. Seems rather expensive. I am sure I did not pay that years ago. Amazon has similar sets for less $$.

I'm having that sticking problem but I think mostly with just my summer lug nuts for my Accord. The 19mm Koken sticks on removal and install. Drove me nuts today doing a pad slap on it. I'm not sure if I had that many issues on my daughters CRV with factory lugs. It was doing it with me just using torque wrench also, never mind with impact gun. That just made it stick harder.

The Accord has Hyundai Elantra wheels for summer. I bought 19mm open end like the factory Hyundai 21mm version for these rims. Tapered seat, not ball, but 19mm so my lug wrench fits them. I think the main issue on these is that the lugs have a taper by the flat parts also. The Koken impact also has a nice taper to it so just sits down that much farther. On the last wheel I used my regular 19mm HF impact socket, not much end tapered flare, almost square in comparison by appearance with torque wrench, no sticking at all.

I'll need to really examine more with the rest of my vehicles and the other sizes but the 19mm Koken and these lug nuts are not playing nicely together to the point I hate this 19mm socket. Maybe it's the lugs themselves as I now read where it says 19mm and 3/4" for the slight difference?

These are the ones I bought.

Yeah I haven't found a perfect solution, although usually higher quality sockets are better. Also almost always guaranteed to have issues with two piece nuts but solid lugs rarely cause problems for me.

Obviously, your experience tracks with nothing I said above :( Your experience was also worse because I virtually never get sticking with the impact or during removal -- just final torquing with a TW

I think some of your issue is open lugs because they're shorter. Less engagement = easier to cock/twist etc. It shouldn't matter, but the physics persist I guess

I had my cheap flip socket sticking yesterday in 15/16" (yeah an '02 Ram 2500 uses 15/16) with shorter open nuts. I went to an old Craftsman 24mm impact socket and the problem vanished.
