Please help,

I changed the transfer case oil with Amsoil Gl-4 and my monty is making a loud clanky sound. Did I use the wrong fluid?
recommendations? I am original owner and it has never been like this.

Which Royal Purple product? Just seeing if there was a large viscosity change difference.

Max Gear is (mostly) a differential gear oil GL-4 and GL-5. I assume you used the 75W-90 which has a higher viscosity than the Amsoil GL-4 75W-90. When cold the Max Gear is WAY higher viscosity than the Amsoil. I'm not so worried about that, but it could be a factor. I am more worried about GL-5 in your transfer case......could be no issue, could be related.

Pablo,

Do you think the Max gear was detriment? At least I have the correct fluid now. On a side note, my local Amsoil dealer never would return my phone calls. Next I will call you.

I hope not. I want to doubt it. But the fluid call out is GL-4 only, per your manual, correct? Most likely if prefers a more viscous oil.

Please describe this noise a bit more. What speed? What happens in 4WD? Etc and Etc??

I have a feeling this doesn't have much to do with the oil. Drive the vehicle at roughly 40 MPH and shift the transfer case to 4H on the fly. See if the sound goes away. If it does, switch back to 2H and see if the green lights representing the front wheels keep flashing on the instrument cluster.

On the passenger side wheel arch (near the air filter box), there's a freewheel clutch control solenoid for the Super Select/ActivTrak 4WD system. When was the last time this was replaced, if ever?

The other possibility is the freewheel clutch switch on top of the front differential - a real PITA to replace.

Last week I changed the Transfer case and diff oils. However, I drove it around the block.. My monty is not my primary vehicle.

So drove I drove it for a few miles. The noise has remied itself.

Thanks to Amsoil. I must admit the previous oil was my error. This is the first time I put amsoil in the transfer case.

I have Mitsubishi OEM oil in the transmission. I'm apprehensive to put Amsoil in transmission. Especially it cost alot to drain [synthetic oil] and refill.

I have a 1994 Montero SR 113,000 miles.

A big thanks to Padro and Falcon_LS

Many blessings!

Glad that got sorted. Don't forget to grease your steering components, balljoints and driveshaft whilst you're replacing the fluids.
