My 8mm Sony camcorder broke, and I need a replacement for my 5-year old son's first piano recital this weekend. I haven't kept up with the latest technology lately. I am thinking the one that record video on a DVD for easier viewing. Any suggestions are welcome.

I would get a miniDV model... cheap is fine. The DVD camcorders are kind of "toyish" and I hear the playback is flaky and nonstandard. Plus the DVD blanks are hard to find and expensive.

Even if it doesn't interest you now, you can input both into your computer, but the miniDV edits MUCH better. Then you can email videos or burn DVDs that way. Or you can just save the tapes.

I have a DVD camcorder and no issue playing in any DVD player. I bought a bare bones Sony and I am very happy with it. Media for me is very easy to find even down to grocery store. I just use to document my daughter who is 11 months now in short bits.

I don't have the time or energy to make edits or transfer to DVD via PC after the fact so its all in a convinient media for me. The quality of it seems no different than the tape based camera's although they are less $$$ to buy.

The only downfall is my DVD Camera has incredible audio that unfortunately picks up the whirring DVD on occasion.
