First of I want to say, I have learned so much from this site thanks to you all. I used to be die hard 3k 3months oil changer. But no more I've moved on to five or 6. Still hard for me to get past that. Was wondering how long should I really run my oil.

90 % highway
25 miles on the freeway to work going about 75. Maybe half a mile of stop and go when I get off of it to the shop. 6 days a week. Also I hit the local track twice a month for a couple 1/4 mile times. Car sees above 5k rpms couple times a week and burns no oil. Using redline 10w30 and mobil filters. With dual knNs. Should I shoot for 8? I will eventually get a used oil analysis. Nissan recommends 7500 miles on convetional normal service which was hard for me to believe. Sorry for my typing abilities I'm on a small phone fingers are kinda of big for keyboard.

I would run 4 month run and not worry about mileage. That would put you at 3 changes a year. I'm sure you could push it longer - but why when oil is so cheap and the life blood of your car? I'm never one to run oil until it's completely shot. My engine wants additives and plenty of em!

Furthermore, the VQ35 is especially hard on oil so you are better served running a shorter then recommended OCI (like us Audi guys and the 2.0T)

+1. With your usage, oil and filter choice, 8k is a perfectly decent interval with plenty of buffer (I like some buffer).

The VQ35 is too hard on oil for 8000 miles.

Not in that climate and with his usage, oil and filter choice. An 8k OCI can be helped along easily enough by removing just the filter at 5k, emptying it, reloading it with fresh oil, reapplying and leak testing. If he can extract even 4 ounces through the dipstick hole easily, he could do that instead. Then add 4 ounces of fresh oil.

A small amount like that added around 5k can boost tbn and replenish the add pack.

The four months does sound like a good idea. Ill put on 6k miles on it by then, and I've read about that 2003 -2006 vq have known to consume oil and the newest one the 370 I know are hard on oil. 2007 2008 vq I haven't seen any problems. I've done a couple used oil analysis with pp and the came back great. Virtually no wear.

finalyzd,

If it were my car I always go by mileage and since you rack up miles pretty fast using dino would be a perfect situation fo you. If you wanted you can switch to a synthetic and do your OCI at the same mileage interval knowing you have a good cushion.

If he's going through that much effort he might as well just throw fresh oil in it too. You can run a filter much longer then the oil. I know a guy who does a couple changes on the same filter (though I disagree with that practice).

If the VQ35 can sludge up after 15k without an oil change - and some people run a 15k OCI on here - why not be a little extra careful on a motor that's known to hurt oil?

That's why I said 4 months regardless of miles. It gives you 3 changes per year - very reasonable - and if he goes 15k miles a year that's 5k per change - plenty long enough in a motor that places such high demands on oil. Even if he is running Red Line.

The only common denominator between that engine and this one is the engine. That particular engine saw a pattern of use that is completely unlike the OPs, and any engine could develop sludge from the neglect that particular one was subjected to. While I think your concern is well-intentioned, the parallel isn't there and the conclusion unwarranted.

Its very little effort to extract and replace 4 ounces of oil by either method. My OCs and filter changes are independent, and this engine is not only hard on oil, but also has sludge inherited from the PO. Does that mean every 1ZZ-FE owner should be worried about sludge and be ultra-conservative - and particularly when the OPs usage is the easiest on any oil, in any engine. Throw in that he's using Redline 10W30 and an Mobil 1 filter, and 8k is already conservative.

I can for sure see where you're coming from Spyder - and if that's what he wants to do I'm sure he would be well served. I simply won't run 8000 miles on any oil in any car no matter the circumstances. With oil being as inexpensive as it is - I just can't justify it.

The way I see it - the motor will run the best with the most amount of additives in the oil. As the TBN gets lower - overall protection starts to drop as well. If my TBN is down to 4 I want it to be changed. Call me wasteful if you will - but for a small peace of mind I would run 4 months tops in his shoes.

Likewise the demands a small 4-cyl like the 1ZZ puts on oil is far less then a VQ35 that gets pushed somewhat hard. I think it's better compared to a poorly maintained VQ then a motor made and designed by a different manufacturer.

I still just can't see the point in going through the effort of extracting a little oil - changing just that oil - or just the filter. The hands are already getting dirty - might as well just swap it out. Especially if he has a fumoto valve.

Furthermore, if he is running a shorter OCI (like 4500 miles for example) he can get the synthetic special of the month - and be better served because he's saving money and keeping fresher oil in his sump

Redline's a pretty darn stout oil.

With all highway, even on that engine, it'll do 10K easily.

If you want to 'tune' the interval to get it just right, you'll need to do multiple used oil analysis.......

Finally, a sensible answer.

Spyder you cracked me up good with your "replace the filter and then 4 oz of oil"

All good points. You guys have access to deals like this that I tend to lose site of (little different in this portion of the hemisphere in terms of specials, rebates etc).

*shrug* it wasn't meant as a joke. The Neptune study has shown that replacing a small amount of oil with fresh oil has a surprisingly positive effect on an extended OCI. There are members who do this.

I have no need to as mine consumes at least that much in consumption (within a week or 2, if that), so it gets regular (involuntary) top ups anyway. This is partly why I do my OC and filter change separately.

Would I personally do this if my car wasn't an oil burner - hmm, maybe. Assuming I can do the oil pan drain, refill in about the same amount of time I can change the filter, 4 ounces is a lot less oil than 4 quarts for a full OC. With Redline going for $13 a quart here, plus 15% harmonized sales tax on top of that, it would save me quite a few bucks.

Lot of ifs. I tossed it out there only because the idea, while novel, and seems off the wall, is sound.

Spyder's logic is sound. Being in Canada, he doesn't have the oil change specials as often as we can get any time here in the states, so it's more cost effective for him to extend his OCI this way.
