I just got 2001 camry with 86,000 miles on it. From what I read online camrys of that year are prone to oil gelling(sludging). what oil should i put in it? Thanks

synthetic oil can take the heat better without sludging. altho in the toyota instance I believe its a combination of high temps and also something with the PCV system that causes the sludge. if it were my (newly acquired) car, I would consider pulling the valve cover to check for sludge. (unless you can see it thru the oil fill )

As long as you stick to good OCI's and good oil, you'll be fine.

My recommendations?
Mobil 1 High Mileage or Pennzoil Platinum. Syn oils that have more cleaning detergents.

Pennzoil Platinum 5w30.

Valvoline/Chevron Supreme conventional. 5-30. Pair it with an OEM or your favorite quality filter.

5K OCI and you are good to go.

I think the 4 cylinders are far less prone than the 3 liter V6, but they're still on the "known sludger" list. From the sounds of it, yours is pretty clean, and using any good name brand synthetic should help keep it that way.

In my limited experience, the 4 cylinder 5SFE is sludge prone too. The few I've inspected looked bad, but...

A friend of mine has a 1999. Any oil I put in it seems to get weak around 3,000 (winter) to 4,000 (summer) miles. I am concluding 'weak' in that it starts consuming the oil quickly.

I have tried 5w30 conventionals, 10w30 conventional and synthetic (Quaker State Q Horsepower), and Mobil 1 15w-50. Even that 15w-50 did the exact same thing - around 3,500 miles of mild (warm) weather usage it began consuming significantly. We left it in nearly 5,000 miles (usually change it before 4,000) and by then it had consumed 2 quarts of Mobil 1 15w-50, same as it does with a conventional 5w30 or 10w30.

I suspect your engine is in better condition, but as other suggested above, find a reasonable OCI to use, up to 5k miles. For this engine I'd choose shorter intervals rather than expensive oils.

Smartest thing I've read in this thread.

Mobil 1 0W40! First whenit first came out Mobil 1 used to advertise on their site that it had the ability to clean sludge out of an engine. 2nd in America it is the most advanced product that Mobil has on the retail shelf including Walmart. It has the most advanced base stocks on the retail shelfs in AMerica. i reposted a thread on this not that long ago from European sources I think a University that broke down the base stocks and had them listed. The problem was it was a locked thread because some place after the first page where the good information was some guys got nasty in the thread! It is on the site still though. I asked Helen if she could repost just the first OP's post fresh as it is by far the best info we have seen on Mobil 1 0W40 but I guess she is still busy!

If it's a known sludger I would run PP + autorx to clean it out, then use a good cleaning synthetic. If you used PP for the rinse phase you could just continue with that.

The thing is this is a secondary car and I won't be driving it a lot, maybe 4k miles a year at most. I am thinking of switching to synthetic and changing the oil once a year.

I service my brother's 2000 4-Cylinder Camry.

Don't overlook the oil filter! A better filter takes out more of the stuff that later becomes sludge.

Since there are a lot of great filters, I'll just tell you which ones to avoid. Avoid all Frams. Even the ones that aren't horrible are more expensive then filters that are far superior. Personally I like the Purolator lineup.

It's much cheaper to upgrade your filter than it is to upgrade your oil. If you do both, then even better but keep in mind that it's probably better to have OCIs in the 3k-5k range with that model of car which is looks like you will be.

Any more details on how you'll be using this car and how much $$ you're willing to put in it? Short trips or long trips only?

And I'm curious, do you normally use a motorcycle? I would if I lived in LA!

around $30.
70-80% city driving, mostly short trips.
unfortunately i don't have a motorcycle. why wouldn't you get a motorcycle in Bowie Maryland, is it because of the weather?

too much rain/snow and cold days here in MD.....

i'd only be able to use it half of a year total if i were lucky

For $10 after rebate, you can get 5 quarts of Castrol Edge and a Purolator Pure One Filter at Advance Auto ($24.99 + text and then you get a $15 rebate directly from Castrol)

These are both highly respected products among BITOG users.

Be sure to get the EDGE and not the Syntec if you want the rebate.

yeah, traffic here in the morning and evening can be real bad. 10 min. drive could take an hour. Sometimes I wish i had a motorcycle too lol especially when you're stuck in traffic and see them sprint by.

Our 02 Camry is in the shop for a head gasket change - apparently there was a recall but I never got the word. Anyway, the mechanic said that other than that, it'll go another 230,000 miles. No wear on pistons or cylinders; I can't vouch for cams and bearings, etc,. Mobil 1 5w30 or Mobil 1 0w30. OCI 5k miles. Pretty much Fram filters for the first 100k miles, then I found this site. OEM now.
