Have you given thought to a lever-gun? I would advise not paying any heed to the haters of the new Marlins being made in Ilion, NY. Marlin was bought out by by Remington a few years back, and Marlin quality suffered when the workers got word that the factory in North Haven CT was being closed. I bought one last year, a 336W in 30-30. It is well made, nicely finished, and was $399 at ****'s. The sights are [censored], but the gun is smooth, and Marlins are EASY to clean.

if you wanting to cheap:
moisin and add a scope (search internet) and shot that.

243 is plenty power to take any white tail down and some Elk
and not that unpleasant to shoot.

Just read more....I used to hunt with a .270 Remington 700 with a fixed 4x. Ballistic silvertips in 130 grains. Absolutely hammered white tails. Really mire gun than I needed, but it sure did work.

You base your opinion of Savage rifles on a Lakefield, a Canadian, budget oriented rifle?

These rifles were probably cheapened up when Savage bought Lakefield, but they are still just a budget rifle meant to compete against other budget rifles. Not a very good indication of overall Savage rifle quality...

To the original op, I wouldn't buy a new Mossberg rifle personally. There are a ton of older great rifles out there just sitting on the racks of pawn shops and guns stores. Winchesters, Remingtons, Brownings, Rugers, Marlins, Savage, Weatherby,Sako, CZ, etc can all be found slightly used for a steal. I've noticed that you can score a great deal sometimes if you know what you are looking for. Many pawn shop don't really know what they are selling, they just mark it up $50 more than they paid for it and put it on the rack. Can get some great deals like that.
