Ok.

General retail statement:

Figure from 5 years ago: theft is a $13 BILLION a year loss to retailers (not shrink, THEFT).

Retail stores scan out $1000's of dollars each WEEK, tens of $1000's of dollars each MONTH, and hundreds of $1000's of dollars each YEAR. This is what is KNOWN to be stolen (empty packages). Add half again or double it for stuff which is unknown shrink. All of the money that retailers put into theft control, CCTV equipment, and the actual theft losses themselves, are passed along to the CUSTOMER. That's right. All of the folks witching and whining about taking 5 secs to show a receipt are paying for the cost of the few dishonest folks.

Who really should care that Walmart checks receipts? The Door Greeter's are mostly retired folks who are trying to supplement their SS income with a very meager wage. They stand there for hours each day, welcoming people in and telling them to have a great day. Sure, some are a tad aggressive at times but something else for everyone to consider here, is that WW associates get bonuses each year depending on the overall profit of the store. Can you blame them for trying to keep the theft down so that....

They make a little extra money...

and

YOU, as a customer, can save a little extra money.

If they ask, you have no duty to show, but you don't need to puff out your chest, flex your muscles, and prove your manhood to the little old person who is just doing what they were told to do. If you have a problem with it, step up to the plate and contact a member of management and plead your case with them. Still don't like it, call 1-800-WALMART and complain to the Home Office. Life isn't always fair and there are much more important things to expend all this energy on.

How about a flip on the "if you don't like it, shop somewhere else" thing. If a ~business~ wants to operate in my town, they better respect the people and their rights, or they can take their "business" somewhere else.

That's why WalMart picks old folks for that position - they know that an even slightly polite person would have a hard time refusing a kindly-looking elder. Remember, to management, we consumers are just mushrooms, too.
