Rear end clunking on Tahoe?

Hey y'all,

When I was driving my 95 Tahoe today, I noticed an unusual clunking noise coming from the rear of the truck. It occurred whenever I hit the gas or let off of it. What does it sound like to you guys?

Yup, U joints are likely.

I've heard of silverados, Sierras having the same kind of thing. Maybe related to the problem those have?

We had a Silverado at work (2001 I think) that had a nasty clunking in the driveline. I remember reading that was a u-joint problem or similar. If it's not u-joints, it may be play in the ring/pinion area, but I think u-joints are much more likely.

Grab the pinion shaft yoke and make sure that it hasn't worked loose. My bet is that it's U-joints as the other posters stated.

I was too quick.
Sure, U joints are #1, but transmission or engine mounts may be bad. Or the rear end may be internally loose.
maybe even a suspension component in the rear that has play.

While you have it apart be sure to clean and grease the splines inside the drive shaft yoke. Mine will develop an annoying clunk every couple of years that is mostly noticed at take off while going over small bumps.
