I need to change my rear end fluid. I was wondering if the rear end additive at autozone/murrays is the same as this stuff:

I used the gm stuff last time but it was like 10$ for a little bottle. I was wondering if i could use the stuff at autozone and just fill the rest of the differential with some 75w90 as recommended?

Yeah I think more details are needed here.

I have a 97 z28 with the stock 10 bolt rear end. It has limited slip. In the past i put that gm additive and added about 1.5 quarts of Coastal 75w90 lube. I am wondering if the additives availible at autozone are sufficient?

Most gear oils have the additive needed for clutch-type limited slip differentials. Read the label on the gear oil bottle. If it says that it is suitable for LSD, you're probably good. If you change the oil and get some chattering, add a quarter bottle of the additive at a time until you get no more chattering. I think all are about the same.

Past experience with posi's and limited slips leads me these statements:

If you have a GM use the 4 oz GM additive.
If you have a Ford, use the 4 oz Ford additive.

I typically use the additive no matter what the lube bottle may say. I use Castrol, Valvoline, or NAPA lubes - they all say OK for limitied slip, but I have had the chattering on 2 GM's until I used the additive as well.

The stuff at the auto parts is not the same.

Ive used m1 in my GM LSD rear in my ZR2 and there has been no chatter. Go with a syn diff oil, and you can go a while longer and even eek out a little better mileage.

Ive had no issues with m1 in my ZR2 LSD, Redline in my BMW LSD and RP in our previa LSD. Never needed additive in any of them. I know the BMW LSD lockup is 25%, dont know about the others, but I assume theyre about the same.

Go with a good syn lube and dont worry about it. If you want to go on the cheap, they sell valvoline synpower LSD oil, and it has additive already in it.
