That's also the method I have used and have had zero seal leaks.
 
I've used metal core rubber gaskets on Ford 8.8 in the past with no issues. Last bunch of times I've opened a dif up I just used black RTV per the shop manual without any troubles.
 
My first gear oil change is early and when I clean out any break in "metallic dust". I also go to an aftermarket aluminum cover with drain/fill ports. Now I have two stiff and machined faces - and a gasket works great.
