Differential, gasket enough?

Dang it! Got the gasket to change rear differential. Forget the RTV. Don't want to run back to town. Can I just use gasket with no RTV? Is the Rtv just basically to help it stick to cover while bolting?

It may leak, if it calls for RTV use it.

Thanks, found a tube. Just opened it up. Noticed the very bottom of differential has a metallic colored sludge. Is this normal? It has 77K miles on it. I bought at 52K. I assumed it's been changed before cause has orange RTV and not gasket.

That sludge is liquid gears...

better clean it out.

Yep, looks like it has some kind of magnet at the bottom. Waiting for the RTV to cure.
