rear diff fluid change with questions

Hi, just serviced my 08 crown vics rear diff...When i was filling the rear diff i over filled and a lot of fluid leaked out for a good min or so. I want to know if thats bad since the diff takes friction modifier and if it leaked out as well even though i put it in with the first litre of fluid? Car was on jack stands and level.

unless the differential was operated chances are good the fluid didn't mix,it just ran out as you were putting it in there.I wouldn't worry about it.

Most of these say to fill until some comes out the hole, so no worries.

i know some is suppose to come out but a lot did and was dripping for over a minute and the fluid had a very mild tint similar to the friction modifier and i know how important the diff needs all of the friction modifier

I think you will be ok. Chance are that the two mixed in while you filling the diff. fluid.

If your diff. won't like it, it'll let you know with chatter.

I assume your diff has limited slip if you are adding friction modifier?

yes it is a ford 8.8 with trac lock

Do Trac-Locs need limited slip additive? The one I put in my F-450 Dana 80 said it didn't!

Yes, they do (The T-Lok diffs like the 8.8 and 9.75).

Ford Trac Loc is a clutch type limited slip and therefore requires the XL-3 additive. The Torsen diffs in the Ranger 4x4 Level 2's do not as it is a gear type LSD.

Some gear oils can naturally have a slight greenish tint in certain light, but usually not as strong a green as the XL-3 additive.
