rear brakes grinding

On a 00 celica gts, the rear brakes make a metal on metal noise that makes noise once every revolution of the wheels. The noise is faster when turning. Not a squeal, more like the sound honing a knife on a sharpening stone makes. When I bought the car, the rear brakes were visibly rusty, all over the rotors, dirty pads, backing plate. When pounding the rotors to get them off, big flakes of rust fell out, lots. I put on new rotors and pads, but the noise is still the same. I haven't bled yet, I will do it because the fluid looks like a brown ale and the pedal is a bit spongy, but I can't imagine it would fix the issue unless someone can clarify why air/bad fluid would make a rubbing sound.

I read somewhere that it could be a possible rub on the backing plate and rotor lip. Can I just take a pin and hammer and carefully tap the backing plate back a little?

Bleedinng brakes will not help. It is not fluid related, but if your brake fluid is that murky, I would flush it.

Definitely try adjusting the backing plates.

Is your parking brake located in a separate drum behind the rotor, or does it operate the caliper?

How does one adjust backing plates? Figure if it rubs a little on the rotor, hitting it back with a pin and hammer at certain spots would do the trick. Parking brake is a drum behind the rotor.

If the noise is the same after new rotors and pads, what is left?
The backing plates and possibly the P brake system.

Just need to know if adjusting the backing plates means beating it with a hammer.
