Really need Caliper Bleeder screw covers?

Today I did a brake flush and noticed that all 4 of my bleeder screw covers are missing. The mechanic who previously did the flush must have not put them back on.

How essential are these? Should I buy new plastic ones?

I don't know, but I made one by filling the end of a piece of rubber hose with silicone and slipping it over the bleeder screw (after the silicone cured).

I think it's just to keep the ends from plugging up. I would say not really necessary, but nice to have there depending especially on where you live.

Where do they sell 4 I can purchase for a '99 Maxima?

Probably any auto parts store assuming all bleeder screws are about the same.

Shouldnt be necessary, you should hit them with brakleen before bleeding anyways. I do every time I bleed the clutch and brakes to prevent foreign material from getting into the brake line.

On my vehicles they seem to keep the bleeders from seizing. Once you get rust way down inside the bleeder at the sealing face it's much less likely they will open. You could try vac plugs or those plastic sleeves they sell to cover screw ends like on playground equipment; some hardware stores have them.

In salt belt, these little caps make a huge difference; the bleeder opening will be plugged with rust in no time without them.
