1991 Tracer, 110+k miles, 20-21MPG 10%/90% HWY/City
1994 LS400, 270+k miles, 17-19MPG 60%/40% HWY/City
2000 E430, 130+k miles, 22-23MPG 70%/30% HWY/City
2004 S2000, 30+k miles, 21-22MPG 10%/90% HWY/City

1991 Acura Integra, 375,000 miles, yearly average about 27-mpg (about 25 in deep-winter, close to 30 in high-summer). This has barely changed since the car was new.

I keep track of the gallons added at absolutely every fillup and the miles covered between each fillup, and have done so for over 20 years.

What I find astonishing is how modern auto technology can build an engine that can be as severely worn as mine, with as much blowby as mine, and burn as much oil as mine, but still get about the same fuel-efficiency it did when nearly new. And still pass emissions tests. Wow. A real testimony to progress.

For all the cars I've had that I've calculated averages for:

1986 Mercury Capri 2.3L A/T- 18/city, 25/highway
1988 Ford Mustang 2.3L A/T- 20/city, 28/highway
1998 and 1999 Ford Escort wagons A/T- 26/city, 34/highway
1999 Ford Escort sedan A/T- 28/city, 38/highway
1994 Ford Escort wagon A/T- 24/city, 30/highway
2003 Ford ZX2 5MT- 26/city, 34/highway
2002 Ford Ranger 3.0L A/T 4x4- 16/city, 24/highway
2011 Ford Ranger 2.3L A/T 2WD- 22/city, 30/highway
1997 Subaru Legacy L 2.2L AWD- 18/city, 26/highway

2002 Caravan 3.3 22mpg consistently.
2000 Mirage 1.5 35mpg consistently.
1988 Aries 2.2 22-25mpg consistently, mileage hurt by 3 spd auto with no overdrive and mostly 65mph highway speeds.

I track fuel use with each tank, so I do have good numbers.
Of the current crop:

Forester: 23 mpg average
Both Accords: 30 mpg average
BMW: 30 mpg average
Impreza: 25 mpg average

All of these cars have had much better and much worse fuel economy on any given tank.
Fuel economy is at its worst over the winter, and is best in the spring and fall, where the fuel is lower RVP summer blend, morning temperatures are not really cold, and there is no need for the A/C.
Yes, the A/C still works well in all of these cars, maybe because we always use it as needed, rather than "save" it for that really unbearable day.

I have put the pencil to it and it has been very accurate, certainly as accurate as,say a fuel or oil gauge, and engine tempture gauge.
