Rank the Synthetic Oils

Oils are definitely not equal. There are a bunch of industry standard ASTM test. Pennzoil, Valvoline and Castrol love to boast when they exceed an industry standard test by 30% or more. There are oils that flow better cold, maintain viscosity better, have higher flash points, more refined base oil (group II, III, III+, IV V). We know even within the same brand they are not equal. Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy and extended performance use considerably better base oil than vs standard Mobil 1 even though they all meet Dexos gen2 and SN plus specs.Pennzoil ultra platinum has clearly better detergent pack (a bunch of calcium) than regular platinum. Half these standardize specs have more do to with SAPs, fuel economy, LSPI and have nothing to do with friction protection.
I have a 4k TV and pay $4 extra a month for 4k Netflix and the only time I have ever benefited is by pushing the info button to verify the live data speed difference between 4k and 1080p. I can't see a bit of difference but its there. Just because you don't benefit from better doesn't mean its not better. 95% of you are changing your oil too conservatively to see any difference from a better oil, 95% of you don't drive anything or any style that you will see any benefit from better oil and 95% of you will easily be able to mitigate any deficit with inferior oil by modifying maintenance schedules/practices.

It has been discussed here that AFE is really the regular M1 product line. The only difference is the grade of oil.

1. Any synthetic oil made by a reputable brand that meets the requirements specified by your vehicle's manufacturer, or in the case if older cars, exceeds the obsolete specs.

2. Any oil which does not.

Other than that I pretty much buy based on sales. It's all fine. One of the best oils you see in used oil analysis around here is Castrol Magnatec, which is also one of the cheapest. Unless you're racing, oil pretty much is oil.

I really thought Mobil 1 would be going for 400 to 500 hundred thousand miles...

Advertising like that is hardly worth the paper it's printed on.

Don't take it as gospel truth or "facts"

Ahh yeah true of course.... However... Still surprising how "low" a mileage Mobil 1 made a claim about in their commercial.

Look at this.

I agree, I just buy what's on sale or what is having a rebate.

And regarding Castrol Magnetic...used it once, absolutely loved it. Quietest my engine ever was, and the least amount of consumption. But even then, I've never used it again because I pretty much only use Pennzoil (with rebates), Mobil 1 (with rebates), Super Tech Synthetic. I only used the Magnetic because someone gave me a case of it for free. But the stuff was surprisingly really good.

For example, how does standard Mobil 1 5w20 stack up against Castrol Edge, PP, Valvoline, & QS in the same viscosity? I read a lot about Mobil 1 Extended Performance, AFE, and AP but don't seem to see much about the old Mobil 1.

Super Tech from Walmart beats them all

I don't know about that but its competitively very close. Only Supertech negative is they don't have rebates. But I do have some of their $15.98 Jugs in my stash. D1G2 as well.
