Quick "?"-washer pump replacment - (check video)

So, I am going to attempt this today. Have part and tools, and going to follow this DIY video as a guide. (cont'd below the video)



I have one question about what he does at 2:21 in the vid:
He takes a RUBBER GROMMET out of the bottom(? - hard to see-) of the washer fluid reservoir and IMMEDIATELY puts it back in - WHY?

I just don't get that part. To me it looks like that grommet remained in place when he took the washer pump out; so why not just leave it in? why take it out and put it back in?

is he making sure that the grommet is seated well, as it might have been dislodged or loosened when he pulled the pump out?

I am just confused over that little part.

Any thoughts on this would help, just want to make sure before I start the task.

It might have come off with the pump, but it might not be easy to put the pump back in with the grommet on the pump, easier with it on the washer bottle.

I'm telling you, spray some WD40 in the old pump and plug it back in. It'll probably work, I did that to my truck a few years back. Lol

Thing is: at that point, he HAS the pump OFF, in his hand (so it didn't come off with the pump)
- he doesn't take it off from the pump; you can clearly see him reaching into the area/spot where the pump used to be....

Meh - I am overthinking it probably. Just gonna do it once it gets a bit warmer in a few hrs.

Maybe to check how it seals around the new pump; those grommets tend to fail on high mileage cars. Just put a new one in my Dads Olds. In fact, if you can find a new one, I'd highly recommend installing it with the new pump so in a year or two, you;re not doing the same job twice when that grommet starts leaking and your washer fluid reservoir ends up empty every few days.

Probably just came loose when he pulled the pump out. WD40 works great on plastic going into rubber, put the grommet in first if it comes out.
Quick and easy.

I wouldn't use WD-40 on any rubber grommet. Use Syl-Glyde or another silicone based lubricant.

Its a non issue, most rubber compounds used in automobiles are anything but pure rubber.

Was a lot easier than I thought. The old grommet was in pretty good shape, so I just kept it.
checked for leaks afterwards, and seems there's none.
(will monitor from time to time. I marked the level on the reservoir neck)
Best thing is labor AND parts were free - a kind forum member on Elantra forums sent me a spare pump he had free of charge; very nice of him.

WD-40 on a rubber grommet?

I've always used clear silicone grease on plastic and rubber parts.

Yep on a rubber windshield washer grommet. No problem. It doesn't last long, barely long enough to do the job.
Nothing better for putting rubber fuel line on fittings. Like i said most rubber today is not natural rubber.
In a windshield washer bottle it would have to be somewhat solvent resistant because of the alcohol or methanol in cold weather washer fluid thats in there 24/7.
