Questions to Amsoil 5W-30 (ASL) Users

Hi folks, I am currently using Amsoil 5w30 (ASL)with K&N air and oil filter in my '06 Hyundai Sonata. I was thinking about going 12,500 miles with this oil, which for me will take about 9 or 10 months (no filter change every 6 months). Is this a good idea?

I have used Mobil 1 before and decided to give Amsoil a shot. I was happy with Amsoil, until someone sent me the test result of the following, which showed Amsoil did not fare in the extended drainage interval. And this he informs me was done with Series 2000 Synthetic 0w30 Motor Oil, which is higher grade product than the one I am currently using.

Not knowing what to believe, I am thinking about doing the oil change early at 6,250 miles (about 7 months) probably within this month. Please advise.

In addition, is Amsoil better product than Mobil 1? I believe it to be expensive than Mobil 1.

The only sure way to know if an oil is able to hold up in your engine with your driving style and your conditions is to to a used oil analysis around 6-7K miles. And if I were to run extended OCI's I would change the filter about that same time and top it off.

Remember-you can go up to 25,000 miles. But if hard driving, towing or other harsh conditions exist then a used oil analysis is the only way to know if the oil is actually holding up for that distance.

I would be extremely curious why "tpup" sent that to you. His car had issues, NOT OIL ISSUES:

As michaelc80 says you can't take a singular used oil analysis out of context. His car was badly treated BEFORE he put the Amsoil in. Read that thread!!! Did tpup say anything else??

M1 vs. Amsoil is a long debate. In some ways Amsoil is better, in many ways they are very similar.

As for your situation I would go 7500-10000 miles FIRST OCI and then do a used oil analysis to see how your engine is performing.

What does you manual state the Oil change interval is to be?

I'd hate to see you mess up a 100,000 MILE warrenty by not following it.

If you have a problem, they DO check out you OCI and what type of oil you used....

- that I failed to note that the car is a 2006!

I think you should do no more than the max Hyundai recommended OCI and do a used oil analysis if you are so concerned.

I need to also ask who you are buying your Amsoil from and what kind of information interchanges you are having.

Don't get me wrong. I am quite satisfied with Amsoil as the car seems to run quieter and smoother. The recommended OCI for the car in the manual is 9,375 miles and since I live in Korea, the powertrain warranty, I belive, is only 37,500 miles long or for 5 years, whichever comes first. Believe it or not, I bought the oil during my visit to the States at a local store in California. As much as I love to do a used oil analysis, this is not possible costwise. Anyway, your replies do assure me and I will stick to my original plan of the changing the oil at 12,500 miles.

I think a Warrenty is a good thing, so I'd go 7,500 miles OCI and thats it.

I would not try to void it.

We don't know how you drive it, what type of city/hwy you do, what trip distance, etc.

Then, once you use up your Amsoil, since cost is a factor, just run dino for 4-5k or 6months and save the receipts for possible warrenty work.

Save the extended OCIs for once your out of Warrenty.

That's my 3 cents!

PS: We also don't know how many miles are on the car? I'd first find out what the Warrenty is.

Then if your out of it already.. Never mind..

(but if cost is a issue and without used oil analysis to back up an extended OCI, Dino is the best safest way to go IMO)

By the way, doesn't Hyundai sonata '06 recommmend 5w20 like it saids on the oil cap?

That UOA does look esp. on some of the wear metals. It may very well have turned out similarly using a different oil, so I don't think too much can be drawn from it.

Isn't the ASL a 25k mile-1Yr oil from Amsoil? And, you have to change the Amsoil oil filter every 6 months? If you use an OEM filter, you have to follow the vehicle manufacturer recommendations...So, if your Hyundai is suppose to have and oil and filter change every 4750 miles, you'r suppose to change the filter at 4750 or 6months whichever comes first. Make sure you read and fully understand all the Amsoil intricacies to be covered by the Amsoil warranty.
Oh, I've got an 04 Hyundai Santa Fe with 4cyl and run the Castrol Syntec 10w30 and change oil and filter every 4750 miles, as per manufacturer recommendation. I did run the Amsoil 7500 mile oil, but stopped..just getting too expensive with shipping...I use to run Amsoil 15w40 in my Dodge Cummins truck and really liked it. But, with Diesel fuel prices going sky high, sold the truck...
