I took a look at the ATF on my 05 Saab 9-5 today and was a little concerned. I bought the car at 94K miles and did 3 rounds of drain and fill 5k miles ago. The fluid today was muddy brown. I pulled the drain plug and swapped out another 4 qts. It's better now, but I don't understand how the fluid got so degraded so fast.

I'll admit, in this post you're reading right now I was going to ask if you were running Mercon LV because it darkens really quick but then I realized that's a stupid question because clearly you wouldn't be running that. So really this post is just me admitting my stupidity.

Throt, the willful damager of others' washing machines, fesses up to...an inadequacy. No surprise there.
Washing machine damagers go on to hurt puppies and kittens.
Stop Throt now!

To the OP: Just keep on cleaning. The fluid in the 9-3 I told my friend to buy was eye popping brown.
Four drain & fills has it looking near perfect. Kira

....OK then.

Seriously, I cannot get my head around the tooth pulling which needs to be done to convince some people it's good to keep transmission fluid clean.

MaxLife "newly revised" Dex-Merc (red jug) with the Toyota T-IV spec is what we use in these transmissions. We've 4 in the family.

I'm selling a 2001 Camaro (T top, 3.8L, 4L60E trans., silver) for neighbors and am so happy the fluid appears totally clean AFTER HAVING TO ADD 36 OUNCES OF FLUID! Kira

Magnefine filter? Any chance you have a leak in the cooler and are getting in some coolant?

But we always say, color is not much of an indicator, UOA is the only way.

It did occur to me that the fluid was cleaning up from the previous 94K miles, but I was still surprised to see that it became brown in 5k. Maxlife was the fill. This round I used Pennzoil Synthetic Multi-vehicle, which is thicker and probably a little better for this trans which specs 3309.

I'd need to see some data to convince me. Some data that says that keeping the fluid clean makes a transmission last longer. Especially with these new lifetime fluids. Sometimes when I read these types of threads, I get the feeling that people think that clean fluids "fix" the mechanical surfaces.
