I remember reading on here that Rotella T Syn 5w40 was having a change(last summer)to it to meet a new spec for gas engines. I'm trying this in my LS1 Camaro and was wondering what the newest bottles will say on the back vs.the old bottles so I don't buy old stock. Thank you!!!!

There has been no change to Rotella-T 5w-40 as of yet. Moreover, it is, and always has been, for automotive diesel and gasoline engines.

Use it in good health.

Was at wally's yesterday passing time before work and noticed a new bottle design, but still rated as being CI-4+/SL IIRC. Almost bought another one, but instead picked up some fuel stabilizer for the shed equipment. I already have more oil than I need...it's almost feels like I'm shopping when I check the oil shelf in my basement!

Take care.

I vividly remember seeing a different spec on the back of the bottle that I bought last year compaired to one I bought last month.....I through out the old bottle so now I can't check it to see what it was.

I thought all the zinc would kill the cat on a gas engine?

I heard they were going to change the spec on Rotella 5W40 from SL to SM around the end of 2007. Have they done this yet? The SM spec is to protect catalytic converters for the newly
government specified mileage, which is either 120,000 or 150,000 miles; I forget which.

Since I have never known anyone in my acquaintance to have a clogged converter, I will use SL instead of SM oil as long as it is available. As someone on a Porsche website said, "a Porsche engine is a lot more expensive that a catalytic converter".

[censored] [censored], when are people going to learn this: SM DOES NOT LIMIT PHOSPHORUS AND ZINC, at least in grades other than 5w-20, 5w30, and 10w-30. GF-4 is what limits it. 15w40 or 5w-40 SM rated oils still have 1200 or so ppm zinc, darn near double that of a starburst GF-4 5w30.

The change to Rotella is the diesel spec; from CI-4+ to CJ-4. It's a big improvement if anything.

And I don't know how many times this low zinc myth can be de-mythed. It's a non issue.

I have in front of me 2 gallon jugs of the stuff. One, from a few years ago, is CH-4/SL; the second, purchased from Wally's last fall ('07) is CI-4+ /SL.

Interestingly enough, for those concerned about ZDDP, as I certainly am, with a pile of flat-tappet cammed vehicles, when I had Blackstone do a VOA on the CI-4+/SL "T" 5-40, it came back showing less Zinc/Phosphorous than the used CH-4/SL stuff I'd also sent along.

The CI-4+/SL VOA is here https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/voa-rotella-t-syn-5w-40-ci-4-sh.80619/

And the UOA for the used CH-4 is here https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/uoa-yanmar-john-deere-diesel-rotella-t-5w-40.80618/

The VOA numbers on the CI-4+/SL stuff is making me so nervous that I'm sending another sample of it to Blackstone to re-check.

Blackstone is becoming notorious for unbelieveably low numbers on their VOA tests. Do a search and see for yourself.
Frankly, I wouldn't worry about it, the recent Turbo Diesel Register comparison test showed quite healthy P/Zn numbers for CI-4+ Rotella 5w-40.

If you can't sleep without doing another VOA at least send it to a different lab, don't throw good money after bad with Blackstone.
