so yesterday i bought a brand spankin' used '09 Mercury Sable. the little card that is supposed to be there with the factory code for the keyless system is no where to be found, nor any notation of any possible current codes.

reading around the interwebs, it seems my options are:
a) suck it up and take it to the ford dealer, so they can plug in their reader and charge me monies
b) root around under the dash/remove panels to find the module itself, and physically read the code from it. (we are currently under invasion by the great white north, it's too cold for rooting around at the moment, maybe if this was spring time)

as for the plugging it in, this is probably something buried deep enough my basic scantool wouldn't be able to find it right?

I have a different for then you. Bought new and had the code, but can confirm while replacing interior parts I saw the module and it does have the code label affix to the outside. I say google it for location on your yr/model or just press the key fob while inside and you might be able to here the relays clicking and then you will have an idea where to start.
and a basic scantool will not give you this

secondary question:
it uses these keys:

the trunk button is worn through, and the lock/unlock fairly worn off, anyone have a good source for replacement pads? don't want the whole thing, just the rubber button pad.

Had a similar situation with a 2006 mercury gm , bought car from a ford dealer they took it into shop 15 min. later had car back with code. I don't think cost would have been excessive if I had been billed.

Somewhere inside the car, probably under the dash is the code. Ford has though in the past put tape over part of it so when you remove the tape it will tear off the numbers.

There is a sequence that you can enter that will get you the numbers through trial and error.

Remember too that the numbers are paired. ie. 1=2, 3=4, 5=6. 7=8. 9=0.

Somewhere I have a list of numbers to enter that sooner or later you will hit the right combo. I'll have to look for it.

They used to put a sticker on the side of the fuse box, under the dash. My 2004 Sable code was there. On newer models the code has to be read by the Ford scan tool/reader.

Keys/fob parts. Ebay. They can program the second key at the same time they read the door code. Once you have two working keys you can program them yourself.

Can't speak specifically for the TauruSable, but on the Crown Vic/GrandMa cars the factory RKE code is on a label affixed to the DDM (Driver Door Module) located inside the (of all places) driver's door.

On my much older Taurus back in the day , I found my keyless code pasted on the glove box lid after I opened it. Also in "cold winter weather" the keyless pad system didn't work most of the time.

I'd hope a dealer wouldn't charge more than 15 minutes labor to read the code. I had to get a second key for my new to me F150 and the programming fee was $50.

More interesting is that someone actually uses the keypad. Been driving Fords with it since 2000 and never used it other than the 7/9 to lock the doors. With the remotes it seems pointless.

My old 94 Thunderbird had a white sticker on the rear trunk hinge with the master code on it.

Hope this helps.

Reading over @ Taurus Car Club of America, I'm Getting this info:
"You will need the dealer to hook up the IDS and read the code for you. I think they will charge you a half hour labor."

"According to this, it is listed on the outside of the auto lock module, which I have no clue where it's location is. But if someone finds it, I would love to know cause I need my code too.

"Sometimes there's a sticker w/ the code in the Trunk, "

"The code may be printed on the Smart junction block. Basically the fuse box on the driver side with all kinds of harnesses plugged into it. Its a PITA to find you gotta unhook the box which i think just slides up or back and then on the side facing you?? theres some numbers printed in grey print on the black plastic. you'll need flexibility and a flashlight and someone to right down the numbers. Thats where i found mine on my 08 i then took a sharpie and wrote it on my trunk lid"

"Just looked exactly where u just described and I found it. Think I broke some plastic but I found it. Thanks for the detailed explanation brother!!"

"On my 2008 Taurus SEL it is on the front side of the fusebox. Kneel outside the car, place your head by the parking brake pedal, look straight in and up, move the bundle of wires out of the way and you will see it "embossed" on the front (facing drivers seat) edge of the fuse box. You will probably need a flashlight to see the numbers but NO MIRRORS NEEDED! "

I HAVE 2 working keys, just the rubber part that you press on is worn out on the one. Tried flea bay this morning, and amazon, and a general google Search, seems i can find replacement button pads for the older ford remotes(little black squares)or their shells in all the colors of the rainbow, I can get replacement pads for various GM , and chrysler makes, but not finding these guys. I don't want to buy a whole key. maybe i'll have to check lost and founds for the right kind.

pointless it may be, but it's there on the car, and i wanna be able to use it gosh darnit!(though i likely won't that often).
those are the 1 thing dad misses most on his '12 explorer(extremely base model, only option was the towing pkg).
he had 'em on the freestyle, and loved using them if he just had to run out to the car for something he'd forgotten.
then when mom got her Taurus,if it hadn't had them it almost might have been a deal breaker for dad.
when they picked it up, he had the salesman program hers to the same number as his car.

I know you want the pads only but there are entire keys on eBay for $10 where you just transfer the internals so reprogramming is not needed.

And you can also UPGRADE to a flip key design.

Quicker and better to just change the key. Plus more hygienic!

I hear you. Wow - I always wondered if people used the feature and I guess some do. Guess I'm so used to clicking the button that it's just second nature to me. And remembering another 4 digit # isn't happening.

The Town Car I had had the number on a small white sticker on the trunk hinge. It may also be written in the owners manual or other paperwork.

I first thought this feature was dumb, but after a while I realized that I love it.

since my mom has essentially the same car(same year and options, Taurus instead of Sable),She Parks in the Garage, and it's still a bit too cold and windy to be poking around under the dash out doors, i poked around under the dash in her car, and there was a sticker w/ a 5 digit number on a unit right above the parking brake, under the fuse panel, in between 2 wire pigtails, couldn't get my fat body/head in far enough to see all 5 digits, out comes the cell phone, snap a photo, lock the car, type in those 5 digits, boom. car unlocks.
woo HOO! way to save myself $50 on a dealer scan!
