Question For Oil/Fluid Extractor Users

What don't you like about your fluid extractor that you currently use? What options you wish your extractor had?

I'm asking because I'm in the process of making and selling a lower cost extractor to the public then say the MityVac systems. It is almost complete, but I want to get some input from my fellow BITOG members on what they would want in the perfect extractor.

Large volume and the ability to suck and blow. Some will only extract and not dispense.

I had Mityvac 7201 for more than 8 years, I bought it to do oil change in my E430 because most MB engines were/are designed to use fluid extractor, I then used it to extract oil in my other cars, also used it to siphon ATF and bleeding brake ...

I like 7201 because I can dispense old fluid into a recycle container without mess.

One thing I like is clear marking by 1 quart/liter incremental on the container. There are markings for 2 liters on the Mityvac 7201 container.

When you say volume, do you mean storage or how much it can extract per minute? As for extract and dispense I've got that covered.

That was the first thing I wanted when I made it. I've put quart markings on one side with liters on the other.

I have the 7201. I wish the lid was easier to remove for cleaning and/or to switch fluids. I.E., I want to remove the old oil in there, clean it very thorough, then install a fluid that I will dispense.

So yes, an easy tool less removal system for the lid. And, maybe a pressure gauge on it.

Easy to remove lid to clean the container is a nice idea, but it is hard to make it seal tightly. The idea of good cleaning to use it as dispenser of another fluid is good idea too, specially to dispense MTF and gear fluid.

OP try to market a good extractor that costs less than others, adding pressure gauge will increase the cost and I'm not so sure about its usefulness. The main job of the device is extraction/siphon old fluids and pressure gauge is workable for dispense only ?

To OP, if you want to market some fluid extractor, you need to get your hand on Mityvac and try both functions: extraction and dispensation. You will see how well it works and to see what other function is needed.

Thanks for the input ! I do have the 7205 model that I based a few things off of. The whole lid on my model just simply twists off and on with a couple of turns.

I'm just trying to make sure I fix any faults or add maybe somethings that I didn't think of yet to the system. At the same time keep the price down way below the cost of the 7201.

I do have prototypes built, and I think a finish model. But I can't really even take a pic just yet until I finalized the product and get the docs in for patent pending status.

For those that like to pull a sample for testing, there is a way to get a sample as you are extracting.

Agreed, it's a PITA to clean it out. My MV 7201 gets used mainly for oil/ATF extraction for that reason.

Having a better coupler between the extraction hose and the larger hose would be nice. The MV one works fine, but does allow air to get sucked past at times.

The weak point of the Mityvac is the couplers. I use the smaller coupler for larger extraction hose, I use duct tape and tape 3 rounds on the smaller hose and it works well with larger coupler. No air leak on either.

I mean storage. I have the Mityvac and it holds 8L with 1L increments marked off. I have owned 2 cars that have 7+ Litre sumps. It is nice to get it all out in one time.

Go for the mityvac. It's a really good product that will serve you well for decades.

I don't like the pump being in contact with the fluid. I think some of the Mityvac ones have the pump inside the reservoir.

I have a cheapo Pella 6000.

It would be nice to be able to get different reservoirs for each fluid type, and than just change pumps.

I think you're lucky to have Topsider working for so long. I had it in 2003 and it worked for 1 or 2 times, then stopped working at all.

Of all the fluid extractor, Topsider is at the bottom of the reliable tools.

I only use it about once a year anymore. I have found that the gasket for the pump to container piece is a little too thick and you have to press hard to screw it on. Once on there are no issues. Just did : push mower, air compressor, pressure washer and sucked out fluid from break and clutch reservoir on car. I really love using it to get out diff fluid.

When it completely failed and you like to have a replacement and willing to spend a little more then Mityvac 7201 is a much better unit. Comparing Topside to Mityvac is similar to comparing 1980 Hyundai Excel to current BMW 3 series.

Or get one from OP, he is working on an improved version of Mityvac 7201 ???

I'd be interested in seeing or testing the product as well. I find cleaning my Mitivac 7201 a PITA, and the way the hoses connect to each other isn't that great. Other than that the unit is a big time saver, and makes dropping a transmission pan w/o a drain plug much easier.
