I am giving the Fram Ultra another try, last time it seemed to give my Accord some start up tick...anyway I was wondering if a 10K mile FCI would be safe when I am doing primarily 1 mile trips many times per day. I would leave it on for two 5K mile OCI's. Would the media be too loaded and reduce flow? Also would the plastic bypass valve be compromised? I know the box says 15K OCI is safe, but is it really with my kind of driving? Just wanting some feedback.

Greg doing 5k ocis? Sine when?

Yes I think the filter should be more than sufficient with that task. It is a very good product from Fram.

The oil filter is not going to know the difference between city driving or highway driving. Its going to filter the same way regardless. The filter will not be loaded if you have a clean engine.

Yes, If it got start up tick again then probably no more Ultras on the Accord. I know the Ultra is a great filter but last time it ticked upon start up more than it should so maybe it was just a defect?

I'd like to know if it was defective too. I wouldn't pay to the company which makes mediocre filters at best for another filter just to find out if the previous was defective but it's still interesting to see.

Fram makes great filters overall, they are mass produced like any other...so a defect here and there will happen no matter what.

Every producer has fans. I find their filters made cheaper than any filter from a Chinese quality producer: a rough base plate with fewer thread turns, paint is so-so, a primitive leaf spring inside. The most beautiful part of the filter is the box and the pictures on it which make you believe that you are holding the most advanced piece of work in the world. All this doesn't mean that their filters are complete junk but it shows how good their engineers are, and if they pay attention to details. Than you decide if you want to trust them.

It will do what you have planned above, easily. Think about it, you're changing oil every 5K so the oil will be refreshed half way through the 10K FCI, and besides the Ultra is rated to 15K so you're golden.

Several irrelevant and insignificant considerations in the original question. Ultra is an up to 15k mile fci rated filter, period. A 5k mi fci means the Ultra is highly underutilized for it's rated fci, meaning ROI is poor.

Beyond that the Ultra would be warranted for the vehicle manufacturers recommended oci/fci. In the case of Honda it would be two MM oci's before needing replacement. However even if run one MM oci, in the year max Honda oci time frame, would under normal usage take it to 6+k oci/fci. Even at that the Ultra is still underutilized.

As for the "plastic bypass" , if you have to ask the question about the reliability of the bypass over the course of any 5k fci, you shouldn't use an Ultra. Fyi, same bypass design/material used in all Fram made filter bypasses including the Honda A02 recommended for two ocis. The bypass is a nylon material and it's reliability is not the slightest concern.

Bottom line, for a 5k oci lots of quality silicone adbv oil filters for less money that will easily handle that interval.

Greg, the FU is a 15k filter and as long as you utilize it for 12-15k, then it's a wise choice. Anything less would be unwise. The filter doesn't "know" how many OCIs there are over the course of its use. My advice is based solely on ROI as my belief is to never pay for premium products if there is no intention of maximizing its use.

Based on your history of OCIs and FCIs, I think you would be better served with a good basic filter such as the PC as I have a feeling you'll be back here announcing another switch in filters within 5k

If an Ultra gave you start up tick the first time, I'd not be expecting a different result this time.

Try a Tough Guard. They are a very good filter at start up, cost a few bucks less and are still rated way beyond your intended OCI.

Greg,
The only filters I've ever had give me start up clatter were Mobil 1, which I still believe are very good filters.
It has only happened on my two older Honda Accords, no other vehicles. I have begun using Fram Ultra on my vehicles with no ill effects.

As far as return on investment, you would be well advised to disregard all, and I mean ALL scolding that goes on here
on BITOG concerning ROI. Your ROI is nobody elses business. ROI is up to you to determine, good, poor or otherwise.

Yea that seems like a good idea.. Even a NAPA SILVER Im sure would be fine and they are only $2.39 , at least for my Car they are that price.

I do not like the idea of leaving a old oil filter on and doing a oil change.

Its like doing a tune up and leaving 1 old spark plug...

Or I know a guy with a V6 that would only change the front 3 plugs then later change the back 3 plugs and I thought that was silly, however I have known more then 1 person to do that.

Anways.

Filters are cheap.. Even FRAM ULTRA isnt that expensive at Wally mart.

what they are like 7$

change the filter......

also when you remove the filer lots of OLD OIL will come drain out , not just out the filter but from the oil filter base plate or whatever you want to call it..

From the car, when you remove the oil filter , I always see OLD oil spill out.
