Exactly. If you're burning a quart per 300 miles then don't waste your money on synthetics. Use a cheap dino 10W-40 or 15w40... Maybe try 20W-50 in the summer. Bottom line though, sounds like the engine really needs to be rebuilt or replaced...

Another option might be something like Auto-RX if the ring packs are gunked up or something like Engine Restorer if the cylinder walls are messed up

I'd be hesitant to use Auto-RX - I think that could make the oil burning worse.

Good idea on trying Restore - I think that, in addition to using a xW-40 or xW-50 oil, would be your best bet.

Let us know how it turns out!

+1 Cases like this adding Lucas Oil Stabilizer or STP Oil Treatment might be the way to go. I doubt any flushes, or engine cleaners are going to help. Don't waste your money on Synthetic oil, or engine cleaners.

Another thought, and this is only if you plan on getting rid of the car in the near future. If you have a late model car in good shape or know someone with a late model car in good shape using a XX-30 oil take their waste oil, run it thru a strainer and use it for top up oil. You can also add a little Lucas or STP to it. An engine using that much oil that you don't want to fix is the perfect candidate for waste oil from a good car. That is the least you can do for the environment if you won't take it off the road. JMO

Would good is running it through a strainer going to do? It's already been filtered by the engine filter. If it needs to go through a strainer, just think what is will do to your fuel injectors! That is a really bad idea...

Used oil containers can have foreign material it (leaves, bugs, etc.). Mine sure do plus worse things than that, like gravel.

OK, and you want to mix than in with your gas why?

I wasn't the guy who made the original post about using a strainer. However, he did say it is for top-up oil, not for mixing it in gas.

If it's burning a quart every 300 miles, apparently no one cared about its oil before. Why start now?

Throw something thick in there with some BARS leak or whatever it's called. That will slow consumption.

I would use Maxlife blend(semi syn) 10W40 and add a quart of MMO(substitute 1 quart oil for MMO). Do that for 1K miles and then drain and fill and do the same OCI again(change oil filter between OCI's). Maxlife semi syn cleans very well and is a great oil for $15 for a 5 quart jug at Walmart. Also has a high amount of Moly...

If the engine is sludged up and the rings are sticking, Maxlife and MMO should give you some life out of that engine.

Good luck...

I think that depends upon the exact nature of the problem, which unfortunately, will be hard to determine without a teardown.

If the problem is that the rings are gunked up, and therefore, cannot properly control where the oil goes, then ARX might be exactly what this engine needs. OTOH, if it's just plain worn out, then ARX might be counterproductive if it acts to remove a barely-functioning scum-seal.

If it were me, I'd probably try it (hey, at this point, not much to lose...). That said, this is nothing more than my underqualified opinion. Any owner facing such a problem should consult with a tech who knows this engine and its characteristics. Best of luck with it.

If the engine is consuming oil because of sticking rings this would be a good method to try. I have a feeling the engine is worn and nothing is going to help. The good news is this is a cheap enough method to try. I guess at this point nothing ventured nothing gained! Good luck!

burning oil can come from a few places, including a problem with the head. a leak-down test on all the cylinders might tell more of the story.

Seriously... put some of that BARS stop leak in it or whatever it's called. It worked like a freakin' miracle on my sisters old car she used to have that leaked and burned oil like crazy. Completely stopped every leak, and slowed consumption a LOT. Also, use a 10W-40 or HDEO 15w40 (cheaper).
