I've been reading some back posts about installations and I notice a common thread is to set up the bypass filter so that it drains on shutdown so that it isn't a mess when you open it; however, let's look at the full senario. I have a dry filter and I check the engine oil with the engine not running. Once the filter fills up, the engine oil sump would be low to the amount that it takes to fill the filter. This could be verified by immediately checking the oil after the engine is cut off. With a 12 quart sump in a big truck, no big deal, but with an engine that only holds 4 quarts of oil in the first place.....it looks to me like you would be driving around with the sump 25% low. Sure, you could put in an extra quart (or whatever the filter holds) but then you risk have the crank hit the oil and foam on startup. Comments?
