I have not had my oil changed in 45 years, I have always done it myself since I was 16. But I just bought a new Ford Fusion that I have been talking about here on BITOG and it came with a year (five oil changes max) worth of free oil changes. I took it in for the first change at 1,000 miles and watched the process from outside the shop and it seemd fine. The car was driven over to the other side of the dealer for me to pick up. About 10 minutes later I checked the oil when I was going to leave and it was a quart low! I went back and told the service guy and he said it held 4.5 quarts and that was what he put in. He showed me on his laptop in the capacities section and he was surprised to see it really held 5.3 qts.so he added another quart and that brought it to full. He said he and the other shop guys have been putting in 4.5. I wonder how many they have changed like that.

What did we learn from this???? Find a local guy and never never never except for warranty reasons go to a stealer. It is always a lose lose deal..
Scary -- at a Ford dealer even. Do you have the 2.5? The 2.0 Duratec takes 4.5 qts. Maybe they got "Focus" and "Fusion" confused?
Not all dealers are bad, just difacult to find a good one. but they are out there.
It's a 2.5 L four cyl. I did check the oil before I left the dealer. I did not want to have someone change my oil but I wanted to save the $'s.
A lot of dealers rush their employees for production. This damages cars, and I know this from personal experience.
Almost without exception, every time I've had oil changed (which hasn't been for years), it has been drastically overfilled. I always used to check it before I left, and I was not friendly about having them correct it.
Maybe after an oil change they leave cars a quart low to save on oil and expenses.
I don't recommend it, but most cars would be "fine" with a quart low, but it becomes close to the danger zone of engine damage. Then a few months later or whenever before the next change when the car is a total of two quarts low and there is engine damage the dealer or shop could say - "It was fine when it left here, but you didn't check the oil since."

If the dealer does not break something, screw up basic maintenance or even do sheet metal damage(!) during a warranty repair I think something is terribly wrong. I found a good nissan/suzuki dealer (Port City Nissan, in coastal NH) but they are 35 miles away from my house and 60 miles from my workplace.

Many of my dealer OC's were 1/2-4 quarts overfilled. As a former service manager, I could tell you the "grease monkeys" are paid minimum wage and just got out of the Hoosegow. I don't want to, and cannot afford to pay an NIASE tech to perform LOFs, tires, alignments or (even!)brakes.

They mean the tech who does the work should always check the level, they weren't razzing you

I lost count on how many times I have been underfilled by at least a quart at the Ford dealers...It happened at Ford dealers from Miami-New York City...One time I was overfilled by at least 4 quarts in New Jersey on my 88 Town Car...Alot of guys that go to quick lubes have the same issue of being underfilled.
Ever since the first time way back I never leave any place without checking my oil and everything else before pulling away...I now go to a independent and stand right next to the car as he works on it.

My cousin had the same problem the stealer did not know how much oil his car took either (he takes it to the stealer so there wont be a problem with the warantee and he gets a great deal there) i went there with him and told the guy it was a quart low and he said oh.... it cant be i said it could be and it is...Here is the kicker his car says to use 5w20 but the stealer only had 10w30 so he put that in he also wrote that on the slip...Most of those guys in service departments are a joke... We did a head for a dealer in December and they got the timing marks wrong during installation and bent the valves then asked me if it could be anything we did to the head...I said yes i sold it to you! He laughed and blamed another guy
Gads, that means they didn't even start it, turn it off and check for filter leaks OR check the oil level. From my experience,you do not get a certified/qualified mechanic for "minor" service like oil changes. I wonder if dealers, in their quest for dollars will even use floor sweepers if their not sweeping to do these minor services. If they can't do a decent oil change, YOU KNOW that the free "safety inspection" is worthless.
