Quaker State Hi-mileage - no certifications?

At Canadian Tire they have Quaker State High Mileage 5w30 on sale. On the back there are no API SM, SL or any other certifications. What's up with that?

They also had older stock SL rated Pennzoil High Mileage for sale mixed with the newer labels. Is the SL worth picking up?

Regarding the Quaker State High Mileage, I'm not sure why it lacks a API label... I've heard others on the board say the 'slick-50' additive has something to do with it. However, it's a great oil without the API lable.

On The Penn High Mileage SL, I would use it without reluctance. In fact I would prefer it over the newer SM version... that's one thing I have to give Mobil 1 a thumbs up to (SL rating on High Mileage oils).

Most classic car and hot rod guys around here swear by this red bottle stuff(10w30); I've used it in noisey engines and it worked better than any SM/SL PCMO oil. Smooth and cushy. I was frustrated with QS not being able to link to a datasheet from their silly website geared to 3rd graders, though.

Yeah the QS website is lame! I checked it out months ago while considering High Mileage oils, and was less then impressed with it. That and the QS affilation with Slick 50 snake oil is a turn off as well

It's still a good - no, GREAT! oil, you just have to disregard the silly marketing. The slick 50 formulation is totally different and non-problematic now. Also there is prob 1cc of the stuff in the bottle anyway

The stuff is geting a big grassroots following ONLY because of its actual performance on the road.

I saw an older bottle of it on the O Reilly's clearance shelf the other day and it had the API certs on it. It said SJ on it. Now its either been there forever, or it still has lots of goodies in it.

I also wonder why its not on the new bottles.

I noticed the jugs do not state Slick 50 anymore...did they remove that from the formulation or just do not advertise it anymore? I could not get the product sheet to come up for me on the SOPUS site.

I saw a chart somewhere that said the SM standard had less valvetrain wear and other improvements. But I'm not sure how that is possible though since doesn't it have less zddp?

The November 2005 datasheet says they're SM oils. You can get SOPUS datasheets and MSDSs at www.epc.shell.com .

Taht's a nice link but the confusion is still there since the data sheet is over 4 years old, and someone said that the older stock had an API rating and Slick 50. Now there's no API rating and no slick 50 listed on the bottle, so maybe the product has changed since the '05 data sheet? Seems like if it was SM they'd say so on the bottle. Also it cost more than Pennzoil High Mileage and usually QS is always cheaper.

The 5 qt jugs at walmart do not have the slick 50 logo, but the 1 quarts do. they may be old stock

I saw a new one quart bottle recently and it said it contained slick 50

I will look at the quart bottles the next time I am at WalMart but the jugs did not have the Slick 50 reference.

They still say Slick 50, it's just in very small print underneath where it says "High Mileage" on the bottle.
