Quaker state defy in a 2006 Vibe?

Hi guys,

Any reason to fear quaker state defy and the zinc additive in a newer car.

My car only has 100k. hardly high miles in my book, but it's on for $22 a jug.

I was also thinking about the advanced durability and a quart of syn as a cheapo blend.

Your vibe is back specd to run 5w20 or 0w20. I would take advantage of that and run defy 5w20 or a 0w20 if you need the low temperature cranking properties.

Is SL rated oil ok in this case? I think car speccs SM

Defy is an SL rated oil and your vehicle likely specs an SM oil, but there is probably little that changed with the engine in the Vibe from 2004 (last model year that SL was the current spec) to 2006, so it would probably be "safe".

The real question is whether you need a high mileage oil. If you do not have unreasonable consumption or leaking, it would be just as cost effective to use a non-HM synthetic blend for the same price and you can easily find blends that are SM or SN.

I think that sounds right.

The consumption seems minimal from what I can tell, and it runs well.

High mileage probably isn't nessecary.

Green bottle is on sale for $16! maybe that would be better.

is it still the 1zz-fe motor? if so it "should be fine" - which i realize is a phrase right up there with "Watch This!" when it comes to "Last Words"....

but... I have a Stash (10qts) of SL rated 0w30 GC i plan on Running in the Vibe in my Sig(My buddies Car, Not Mine) the next couple winters...

How does the green bottle start on those cold Saskatchewan winters with Green bottle in there.

I have a soft spot for quaker state because my wife always took her car there when we were first dating....I know, a softy

The one issue we have up here, other than the price gouging, is the lack of synthetic blends.

Castrol blend is as close as it gets, but usually its sitting at 8.99 a liter!

It's fine. I've mostly used 5w30 for over 25 years in my personal vehicles. The 10w30 in the truck will be fine with a pan heater as needed until I change it to something more sensible, like the 5w30 QS in my stash.

With reference to daves87rs's comment, Pennzoil conventional might still be on special at a local Walmart. So, that could be worth considering, too. Also, if you have a local SOPUS distributor that is also a Pennzoil-Quaker State distributor, you might get a good deal on any of the three PCMOs. It's just that not all SOPUS dealers are permitted to sell Pennzoil-Quaker State products up here.

For Castrol stuff, I believe there's a Wakefield distributor in Calgary, but I don't recall absolutely for sure - either there or Edmonton, I'd think.

Not sure if have LOWE'S hardware in the great north, if you do, Formula Shell is $13 / 5qt jug.
