QSUD vs. PP: Latest info?

The primary advantage of GTL basestocks for RDS is that RDS and QP have the joint venture Pearl GTL plant in Qatar and the feedstocks for this plant are free, such is the abundance of natural gas in Qatar.
Aside from the small sideline of motor oil basestocks, this plant produces mainly liquid fuels.
RDS has said that the plant is economically viable as long as oil prices remain above $40.00/bbl.
There has been talk of building a similar plant on the US Gulf coast to take advantage of the current abudance and low prices of natural gas in North America, although that plan was put on hold more than a year ago.

What I was referring to is when you look at CCS and NOACK, the old Pennzoil Platinum formula made with traditional XHVI base oil compared to the new Pennzoil Platinum formula made with GTL base oil, there's not a big difference, at all. Also, Quaker State Ultimate Durability is nearly identical to the old formula Pennzoil Platinum.

It just makes me wonder what the big advantage is with GTL if any?

Marketing hype to support a formula change to GTL?

I'm using PP GTL right now. Not against it. Just makes me wonder.

I think it is a superior base stock than hydrocracked mineral oil, and while Pennzoil isn't currently supporting it I think PU would easily do extended OCI's of 15k on modern engines.

That said, just as the performance difference between group III and IV oils have become very minute, the performance between GTL and Hydrocracked mineral oil is also probably very minute. Ultimately the additive package probably makes the biggest difference and since PP and QSUD are nearly identical, they probably provide very similar levels of performance.

So you think that a GTL Grp III is superior to a liquid feedstock derived Grp III?
Do you have any data to support this thinking or is this merely an assumption?
I'm curious, in that it's hard to see how GTL PP and PUP products are in any way superior to the products they replaced.
By some measures, they're inferior.

I've got PP 5w-20 in my Saturn, which specs 5w-30. I went with thinner oil for winter and for once I guessed right---but I don't want to leave 20-weight in this engine much longer with hot weather coming, so I plan to change it out in May, even though it will only be about 5 months/4K miles.

I've run M-1 HM with good results, but I am happy with PP and plan to stick with SOPUS, barring an insane deal. So, how different is QSUD from PP? I've researched this and seen conflicting info. AAP has a good deal on QSUD for a few more days, which tempts me. But how much if anything do you lose going from PP to QSUD? Same company---kinda sorta.

Anyone know the latest on this? Thanks.

Yes faramir9, although Pennzoil and Quaker State are made by the same parent company (SOPUS) they are two totally different brands and formulations! We also agree that the Pennzoil Platinum line of motor oils and Quaker State Ultimate Durability are both top-shelf motor oils – so you really can’t go wrong using either one of them.
