It's actually not even rated by the API is it, I have a quart that says "meets or exceeds SL API" but it doesn't have the doughnut .

Yeah, I noticed that too. It's not an "Energy Conserving" oil.

I also have a gallon of Mobil 1 10w30 SM rated, I am still fuzzy on the ZINC of SL and SM and if it's hard on catalytic converters .that's why I haven't used them yet .

Do you consistently use Defy ?

SM
Introduced on 30 November 2004 Category SM oils are designed to provide improved oxidation resistance, improved deposit protection, better wear protection, and better low-temperature performance over the life of the oil. Some SM oils may also meet the latest ILSAC specification and/or qualify as Energy Conserving. They may be used where API Service Category SJ and SL earlier categories are recommended.

SL
2001 Gasoline Engine Service Category SL was adopted to describe engine oils for use in 2001. It is for use in service typical of gasoline engines in present and earlier passenger cars, sports utility vehicles, vans and light trucks operating under vehicle manufacturers recommended maintenance procedures. Oils meeting API SL requirements have been tested according to the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Product Approval Code of Practice and may utilize the API Base Oil Interchange and Viscosity Grade Engine Testing Guidelines. They may be used where API Service Category SJ and earlier categories are recommended.

Probably not but the Defy has approx 1050ppm zinc vs roughly 800 for the average SM(I believe PQIA tested it)... Was advertised on TV when it first came to market as having extra anti-wear additives that were beneficial to older engines... Supposedly stops 98% of future wear...

BTW M1 5W-30 High Milage has approx same amount ZDDP as Defy and also SL on the container...

So I guess probably don't use. Defy during warranty. I bet sopus would not sale a non quality oil though even if it's not api scertified. They claim the zink will not hurt the cat.

Where'd you hear that?? The reason zinc was reduced from the 1000-1200ppm levels was the long term effect it was having on catalytic converters... With increased warranty spans on the emissions system, mfgr & API responded by reducing zinc levels...

OK I'll have to check that out...

I have the M-1 HM in one of my vehicles... Long out of warranty if it sours the cat I'll put a piece of tape over the CEL...

If your engine does not burn oil you can run racing oil with its ultra high levels of Z&P. I run higher levels of Z&P in my S2000(114k miles) and my cat is just fine(gets tested every two years) because my car doesn't burn or lets the oil past the rings. Its when it gets to the cat that it can shorten its life.
