OK BITOGers, don't slap me too hard. It's just that I've got a flippin' stockpile of this stuff in the garage, & I can't see how I'm ever going to use it all in my wife's Expedition.

It's all semi-syn. API SJ 10w30. Would it be OK to use in my stock '00 VW GTI 1.8T for 3-4k mile intervals? (Yes, I know it's not VW approved) I don't push the little VW too hard.......What say the BITOGers? It's not about trying to cheap out; I just need to use up this oil.

Of course it would be fine for short intervals....

The VW 502.00 spec isn't chiseled on stone tablets and carried down from the mountain. It's as much about oil durability as it is about oil quality.

Any good 15w-40 like Chevron would also be fine for a VW in warm weather use; provided you didn't run it too long between changes.

WW: I agree with TS. If you change it at 3 or 4K
intervals I don't see any problem. Remember that API SJ was current in 00' when your VW was made and also that this is a semi-synthetic (probably PAO). Go for it.

I put it up for sale before I read you guys' replies. If nobody buys it, I'll run it in the VW.

Make sure that you can proove you changed the oil/filter with the proper materials, in case you need to get a new engine under the campaign sometime down the road.

It's probably ok. Just remember to let the turbo/engine cool down after spirited driving before shutting down engine.
Personally I would not use anything but synthetic oil in a turbo engine (VW502.00 or not).

I concur with norwegian oil. I have an Audi TT with the 1.8T. I would use nothing in it except a full synthetic. And that would be Mobil 1 fpr my preference. Those engines are known to run hot and the turbo is hard on oil. 5w-40 is what my manual says should be used. Remember the sludging issues with the 1.8T engines. Audi has increased the warranty on these engines and I think VW did as well.

It being the 1.8T, I would be very careful what you use in it. I am sure your wife won't mind you changing her oil more often.
