I just came from Adavnce Auto Parts where I just bought Quaker semi-synthetic 10-30 on clearance for 10 cents a quart. All they had in stock was two quarts so I snatched them up but the sale rep said that particular oil was marked down so low because they had problems with it. Something about a recall with that type of oil concerning a consumer safety bulletin and that it was damaging a small amount of engines.

It wasn't syn-power, just labeled semi-synthetic in the clear plastic bottles. I tried to find something on here but came up negative. A google search only came up with this;

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.ht...roduct%20Safety

Should I even use it?

That post is from 1981. I have not heard of any recalls on any QS products in the past 20 years. What is the API rating on the bottle. If your that concerned I would take it back to Advanced or for $.20 I would pour it in my waste oil tank.

My brother has been using Quaker State blend 10W-30 for years with no problems.
Hard to find these days; might have been discontinued.
He just got a new Dodge, and they now spec 5W-20, so he may have to finally go to full synthetic.
The stuff you found may be SL.

I was reading the article and thought I havent seen Deluxe blende or Super Blende since I was a kid and my Dad was pouring in a Buick Skylark. 1981 would be about right. I dont think there is anything wrong with that oil, just more idiots at Advance auto coming up with their own conclusions. Really if the oil was recalled, as with any product, they dont sell them or even give them away, they are as they said "RECALLED". Havent seen any Chinese toys at Walmart on the clearence rack have you?

Kind of off topic, but way back when, QS had a 10w30 out called Sterling, which was PA crude. I used it a few times, and enjoyed the way it looked and smelled. PA crude has a unique odor all its own.

esmitty82, I bought some QS 4x4 full synthetic 10W-30 at autozone for $2.95 per quart. I think they are discontinuing some products and are clearing them out. You got a better deal than I did.

My experience on over hearing the motor oil advice given by most of the people that work at the big chain auto stores is that they are quite uninformed. You got a good deal. Enjoy it!

I remember that true Pennsyvania oil, I remember the Pennzoil when it was made by Pennzoil with Z-7, it was goldish brown with streaks of dark brown when you dumped it in and you could smell it for a week after you changed your oil in the car, no [censored]. If newbies were to see and smell it, most would have a cardiac, but back then, it was normal.
