I have to say with the 40% cleaning claim (up from 15%) I am seriously considering going from PP to PYB. I always do 5K OCIs due to warranty and the major attraction for me with PP was the supposed cleaning ability.

However, I do a lot of short trips (5-20 miles) and several cold starts per day (~4). Thus I'm on the fence.

Do it! That is precisely why I switched from PP to PYB. I used to drive 5 mins or 2 miles back and forth to work. The PP was a waste with that kind of driving. I had the standard winter condensation, so I couldn't bare to leave my motor oil in past 3 months with such short trips. (That is my reasoning at least.)

Because you need to do 5K OCIs for warranty, there is no reason for not using the new PYB.

Just got 7 jugs for our 2 cars. I am all set for 2 years!

Use it with confidence. SOPUS has gotten ahead of the game and is producing the best dino on the market IMO. The old PYB was great, this can only be better with the GF-5 formulation.

If you used PP before, then how dirty can the engine be? I mean, wasn't PP the golden boy for cleaning ability not too long ago, and now PYB beats PP?

This whole cleanliness thing is getting a bit silly, I guess the marketing guys figured you can only ride the sludge scare so much, they had to find something else for the public to worry about.

This is correct. If you do 5000K OCI, then you have nothing to clean anyway.

I dunno, what if it cleans so well that the next engine tear down you are staring at an invisible engine?

I agree. If I bought a brand new car and did 4 or 5K (or 6 month) OCI's I wouldn't expect that there would be much to clean regardless of oil brand.

I'm waiting for someone to claim that some oils clean too good; increasing clearances and that a good layer of varnish is essential in the form of a protective shield; effectively "sealing" the engine surfaces from harmful elements.

The varnish and sludge that we may see is usually not hurting anything.
It's the stuff we DON'T see in the ring/land area that concerns me a lot more.

Several things but the main thing is more boron.

Thanks. At my WM last week, it was only $1 more than QS ($11.50 vs. $10.50), so I bought a jug.

If the car is in good working order and it's mostly highway miles, I don't see why not. My owner's manual recommends every 7,500 miles or 6 months for "normal" driving and this was back in 1994.

I kind of agree. If my car didn't require synthetic, I doubt I'd use it.

If you have the same OCI for dino and syn then it's a waste of money. But if you double the OCI with syn then it is not a waste of resource or money, it's also save your times and labor cost if you pay someone to do the oil change.
