Putting the Explorer up for sale- ?

So I am dying to get back into a manual transmission daily driver car again.

I purchased this Explorer a few months ago from the Original owner when I was desperate to find a vehicle that seemed like a good value. Thought I might use the towing capabilities but now finding I have no need for it.

I have put a lot of money into the truck as I was setting it up to go another 100K miles
My asking price was $4800 but I decided to lower it to $4500 and staying relatively firm.

Does this seem like a fair deal for a relatively low mileage Explorer?

Yeah he needs to put the miles in the add. I can see from his sig it has 109K.

They do have chains. 2 or 3 I think.

Just crossed 110K,

It is a timing chain (4.0 SOHC) I did the acc drive belts and plugs because it was at the 100K maintenance schedule.

The problem is that most of the Sport Explorers in my area are GARBAGE -rotted out, sagging rears and most are in the 150K-190K mile range. So my explorer looks overpriced but its really a litttle under priced given the lower miles and recent work done...

+1. Only issue is the peeling paint and whether it can be fixed and contained.
 
I'd include the 109k mileage in the ad description even if you have to scuttle the ipod mention.

Are the timing chains and tensioners the orignals? Up until the 2002 MY, they had problems with the plastic tensioners on the 4.0 OHC. Our first Mountaineer puked the tensioners around 135k, for reference.

If you get a potential buyer who knows of this problem they will ask and hammer you on the price if they have not been done yet.
 
Looks nice! I would add the mileage to the ad, it's the first question they are going to ask when they call. If I see an ad without mileage listed, I assume it is ridiculously high and just move on to the next listing.

I think you're in the ballpark for the price. You'd be in a stronger position if it were the fall since is is a 4x4.

If this were fall, I have no doubt I would get 4700/4800
It you just don't find them this clean and well taken care of.
 
Your price is definitely in the right ballpark. Around here you could probably get $5K easily since most in the South are 2WD. A dealer would have it listed for $5500-$6500 most likely.

A local dealer down here had a pristine 1994 Sport manual trans 2WD with 66K miles on it listed for $6K...it sold quick. I was watching it hoping it would linger and drop in price, but no such luck. The ad was off CL in a couple of days.

It varies some by market though. If people in your area tend to turn their noses up at older 2-door truckish SUVs, it will be a harder sale. Down here older SUVs and trucks are still highly desirable, so clean ones sell at a premium.
 
I can see in the pictures that it needs a new steering wheel and console lid. Peeling paint too? I would pass for that kind of money. Just my opinion. Those sell cheap around here. You would have to wait a while to get that out of it here. Good luck though.
 
I got a perfect, used console lid for my Explorer for something like $20 on eBay Motors. It's three or four screws to replace and you're done.

That steering wheel was used on tens of millions of vehicles from Rangers to the F-150 Lightning...should be able to find a good one for less than $100. I'm not sure why some people have a death grip on the wheel that does that to the leather. I've had the same wheel with leather in an Explorer and Ranger and never had the leather do that...over 300K miles combined on those steering wheels. I actually saw one on CL where they not only unraveled the leather, they actually BENT the top of the wheel.

Yep fix those two things and it's more likely to sell for full asking price. People don't want to have to fix anything when they are buying a car. Needing paint is hit or miss. I have also never understood the worn out steering wheels. What the [censored] are people doing while they drive to tear them up so bad.
 
I actually have a peice of replacment leather for the steering wheel- Hoping to get around to it over the next week-

I am playing around with the idea of fixing the peeling pain on the roof. Since no one really sees the roof, I was thinking of attempting it myself -sanding primer and paint. Might be a fun project

My advice is not to mention the peeling paint in the ad. When someone comes to check out the truck, let them decide in person whether or not it bothers them.

Putting it in the ad is just gonna turn off potential customers who might otherwise not mind it once they see the truck in person!
Take my word for it, Ive sold probably over 200 cars on Craigslist.



Also, if your gonna show pics of the interior, you really should change the console lid, stupid little things like that can be a big turn off... especially since the rest of the interior is so clean with no rips in the leather.
The steering to me is not even that noticeable, the console lid however stands out really bad!!
