I wear a gun. Many of us out there these days.
Ever try bouncing a face, they having a conceal carry permit? Good luck attempting that.

Member FordBroncoVWJetta did the smart thing not going face-to-face with the truck owner.

I haven't read all comments so not sure if anyone asked, but have you talked to your insurance agent about how to deal with this? Maybe he/she has better options that will help you teach him a lesson.

FWIW, I overthink when I park my vehicle. I do not park my vehicle close to any truck or luxury car/SUV. I am of strong opinion that these drivers are arrogant thickheads. I have enough experiences under my belt to make this conclusion in my neighborhood. I always prefer to find a spot where others do not want to park their vehicle as a first preference.

I do the same thing. And if I can't pull into a parking place without the other vehicles being too close to mine (like how close the truck is to the VW in the picture), then I don't park there. I find somewhere else to park. I'd rather not deal with the possible damage to my car (or with the possibility of the other driver falsely claiming that I damaged their car).

OP - Sounds like you handled it correctly / getting photos, and calling Police.
You may not completely like the outcome, but in life, sometimes you have to compromise.

When I park in any large shopping center, I try and park next to the Cart Corral.
I figure it reduces my chance of door dings by 50%.
That and park further from the store.

For security reasons, I like my vehicle to be in my sight while walking thru parking-lot.
If you park next to a large vehicle, the crooks can break in and not be seen.

I wouldn't call the insurance company until I was darned sure there was no way to collect from the guy who damaged it.

Assuming that the other guy's insurance is going to foot the repair bill, I would emphasize the importance of finding a superb body shop. Metallic paint seems to be very difficult to blend and match. I often see repaired panels with mismatched paint. Have the repair shop spend the time necessary to get it right.

Welcome to the world of A-holes. I agree with most others here. Don't ruin your life creating too much stress getting your car back to like-new condition. On the other hand, don't let the scoundrel get away with just a wrist slap either. Best of luck to you.

There is no law against mental illness and it sounds like you ran across someone with a diagnosable personality disorder at the least. There is no other explanation for this guy's actions.
Getting the video that you could was smart and Walmart can probably provide good video to the cops and local prosecutor.
This will be a misdemeanor charge, but it may well be pursued if only because the perp has probably come to the attention of the local authorities before. I doubt that this was an isolated incident and the only time the guy did something inexplicably foolish with police called.
You haven't shown any pictures of the damage, but if there is no broken paint film, there's a good chance that it can be PDRed.
Keep us posted on what the locals decide to do to this guy legally.
Also, if you deal with a real insurance agent and not some online source, ask him about local body shops. While insurers typically have recommended shops, any experienced personal lines agent will know who actually does good work locally. No need to use the VW shop and they may not be all that good anyway.

Wow what an ordeal! That's a level of dooshbaggery I've luckily never had to experience. Hopefully it all works out through his insurance. Sorry if it's been said, but I'd avoid small claims court. Just because the judge comes to a dollar amount settlement doesn't mean you'll easily get that money.

It's just property damage not personal assault. Once you involve physical aggression or wave/threaten weapons you are becoming an aggressor. The guy was not threatening his life.

This all being said my wife was involved in a nutty event with witnesses who owned an expensive car and her junk box 18 year old Civic. Once she pulled out her cell phone(not even flip!) to call cops he ended up paying her $4000 cash to not call anyone or press charges.

Man, I just don't ask people questions like that.

+1 ... I agree ... There are questions you just don't ask because it's rude to ask such questions and more importantly, it's none of your business.

While I also agree somewhat, the internet makes people keyboard warriors and questions that would be off limits in person become easy to ask. On the face of it, it would seem like it's a bad financial decision, but it's not like the OP is stuck there for life, sounds like it's just a college job so it's fine.

Guess I'm just a keyboard warrior then... not someone who is genuinely trying to gain some insight into why and how people make their financial decisions - maybe I'm doing something wrong and am making things harder on myself than it needs to be. [censored], if a young kid who works at walmart can afford a brand new car, what am I doing wrong in my life (a lot)? These are the reasons I ask the questions that I do. Also, I never implied that he was going to work at walmart the rest of his life, he clearly stated he was a student - which is why I asked the question.

I ask because on the surface, it would seem like a bad idea - I was just curious as to the situation that would allow OP to do this - and he graciously explained, and now I know. Sometimes you have to ask questions that may be considered a little rude or gauche. That's how you learn things and gain insight. Do you go through life assuming everyone lives just like you and makes the same decisions you make? Don't you ever get curious about what drives someone to make the decisions they have made and POSSIBLY try and learn something from that? Jesus, this forum is filled with some uptight a-holes. Get off your pedestals.

Look, if the kids got scholarships and/or parents/trusts/whatever to help pay for school, than more power to him - the reason I asked is because 60%+ of college grads have student loan debt (on average about 30K+) and generally at higher interest rates than good/excellent credit auto financing rates. Again, just trying to gain some insight into what allows people to make the financial decisions they do. If I'm doing something wrong I sure would like to know and try and fix it.

If the insurance covers it with nothing out of pocket for you, then you are not really victimized, other than time and aggravation.

If you have to pay a deductible or other fees/money, to get your car repaired, then you should absolutely be reimbursed for that.

Find out if criminal charges are going to be filed. If they are, then get in contact with the victim advocate at the court house. Tell them you are a victim and that you wish to file a victim impact statement and wish to seek reimbursement if the defendant is found guilty.

If that doesn't work, then by all means, go to the court house and file a small claims court. Its extremely easy to do so. Just document everything now, bring all receipts and police reports, and all other evidence. Some people say its not worth their time or effort to do so. I disagree. I am a man of principle. I would spend $200 to go after $20. Whats right is right.

Bubba,
OP might not have the time, money and effort to be away from work / college.

HorseThief,
If college kids have school loans, they pay them back by having a job.

Its employee parking. For what ever reason it got painted wrong.

I hope camera works out. Locally from cop friends they catch/prosecute lots of folks because of incredible and clear footage Walmart has. Walmart apparently easy to get timestanped and location off credit card footage.

I presume they watch employee lot too in case of employee theft.

Agreed. It doesn't matter if he's driving a barely functioning Geo or the rarest McLaren in North America with $1000 per month payment for the next two thousand months. None of that is the point.

Agreed. And none of that is anyone else's business.

Welcome to the world of Dr Dr. Raymond Cocteau. It will be a cold day in Hades before I stand there and watch some A hole damage my stuff and do nothing.
I couldn't look at myself in the mirror without feeling like a spineless wonder. The loss of self respect is worse than any damage.

What thor said. You don't have control over who parks next to you, but you do have control over where you park. Those behemoths should be avoided at all cost. I understand how you feel about your vehicle. I put a crease in the trunk lid lip of my 04 this summer and still kicking myself. Body shop quoted $700 for salvage lid and paint to match. I sprayed the damaged area with Eastwood amber HDr AntiRust to prevent rust. The angst of vehicle ownership.

If there was any damage done to the rear quarter panel, you might as well sell the car. They can't unbolt and replace the rear quarter panel.
