Purolator tears still an issue?

I saw that a while back people were finding some issues with tears in the media of Purolator filters. Does anyone know if Purolator ever addressed this or if the problem is still popping up?

I use PureOne filters on both of my cars and am assuming that there was simply a bad batch of filters that got out.
 
You're not allowed to ask that question, much less answer it. If I say yes, it's still an issue, I'm a Puro-hater. If I say no, it's not an issue, I have my head in the sand.

In any case, check the pictures in the filter subforum. There are plenty of torn filters still turning up, and they seem to come from only one manufacturer.
 
Feel free to comb through my posts on the topic, the correct and only answer on the purolator non-issue lies there.

Yes it seems to still be an issue but most smart persons on here have moved away from them....

There may have been a bad batch of filters, or there may have been a run of sub standard quality media. No one knows for sure.

But, the problem has been small and isolated. It is not the wide spread apocolyptic problem you may have been led to believe. Some people on here (affectionately referred to as "Frampires"

) have all but dedicated their lives to continuing this myth.

Purolators still function just fine and are an outstanding filter choice. They will perform just fine, but like anything else, must be used correctly. I.E. one shouldn't run a classic for 10k miles then complain when it fails.

Dont worry OP, keep using them with confidence. Feel free to browse through any of the Purolators I have posted here in the past. Not one was torn. And stay tuned, another "evil" purolator will be posted here tommorow once I finish my oil change!

Some people think the tears are a "feature" and won't harm anything...

I'm not an Engineer so they could be right or wrong, who knows.

Pro-line and the rest of those jobber filters arent really part of the equation. We are talking about Purolator filters proper, not rebadged filters or those made to other (lower) specifications.

No one thinks that media tearing is an engineering feature. Who told you that??

Sure, if you are ok with a filter that basically goes into bypass -and stays there- in 1000 miles or less.

Fact: many Purolators are tearing, however it is unknown what percentage. I have moved on.
 
Its not like an engine with a design defect and your stuck with it till they issue a fix, its an oil filter.
Obviously its a concern to you because you asked the question, just buy something else no made by them.

I ditched the ones i couldn't return in the bin and don't buy them anymore, too many options available to worry about something like that.

+1 I returned mine, it just isn't worth the hassle, or wondering if the filter is torn or not. I say why bother? If and when they get their act together, and these threads fade into the abyss, and they get good reviews, then maybe I'll consider them again. The bottom line is there are better filters, less controversial, for the same money or less.

Wake up Purolator!
 
When their website says problem fixed with a guarantee, probably. Even their filters like ProMotive tear, the name Purolator is written right on it, and they brag about their history from 1926, synthetic blend, blah blah blah. They are owned by Mann now, and as far as I am concerned the history is down the drain, and a pox is on anything with Mann on it as well. Because you take responsibility for your mistakes, and so far they haven't.
 
Wire backed synthetic media has shown to be quite durable from multiple brands...including Purolator (and Fram, RP, Amsoil, Wix, Napa).

Even if you do 5k OCI's you can simply leave the filter on for 2x-3x OCI's.

I wouldn't use a Purolator Classic, and will stop using Motorcraft until tear problem (however minor it may be) is less prevalent. If I were choosing a cellulose media filter, a Wix/Napa Gold would be my first choice.

No one is trying to change your collective perception of Purolator. That being said, it isn't right to fill the new members head with nonsense.

OP I encourage you to make your own decision. Dont take mine or anyone elses word for it. As for my experiences, I can honestly attest that I have NEVER had one tear. They have ALWAYS performed as advertised and I CONTINUALLY post pictures of filters that haven't torn.

Do some research and if nothing else, cut open the Puros you are currently using and post pictures for us to see!

Wow. I had no idea this was such a touchy subject haha. I have a PureOne on my Camry which is due for its next oil change in less than 2k (5k OCI on Pennzoil Platinum 0w20). I think I will cut it open and check. A tear and I'll move on. No tear and I will continue putting them on my cars. Simple enough
