With all of the hype about Purolator filter tears, I'm wondering if anyone has noticed something on their website...

"Purolator PureOne oil filters should be replaced every 3,000 miles or 3 months depending on the driving conditions - or unless otherwise specified"

They also state the synthetic filter provides protection for 10,000 miles.

There is no mention of an interval for the standard filter.

With this info, I have a few questions:

1. Is anyone noticing a media failure on the synthetic filter?

2. If the recommendation is 3/3 on the PureOne, does this perhaps explain why Purolator has supposedly not "corrected" the issue? (the failures happen after their recommended interval, therefore it performed to expectations)

3. What would be the "interpreted" interval for the standard filter? (considering it's supposed to be inferior to the PureOne)

I interpret the miles to be the same on the regular filter, they certainly would not be higher. The thing that sets the P1 apart is the filtering abilities. I run mine for 3-5k. I will continue to buy them also.

I'd call it a cop out. With auto manufactures specifying longer drain intervals why would they not make a filter that doesn't match that? So I'm suppose to change my filter three times on my 7500k mile OCI from Hyundai?

I can only speak to my limited experience with the P1 and the white cans. If P actually believes it can use that 3k mile crutch I can't see them repairing the reputation. I can understand the white can 3k but the P1 should be able to hit the 7500 mark. If not IMHO its an engineering failure. Competition is pretty rough in the price point range of P1.

I've cut mine open and so far lucky me; I must have gotten my stash before the apparent quality control issues arose. I still have lots of em so I bought a good can opener so to speak. I've had wavy pleats at 7200 - 8k miles on the Armada but no tears.

I have a pick of a P1 at 7600 (Armada) and a white can at 6200 (Camry) and will be doing the Armada again (P1) within 4 weeks at about 7500. Can someone be kind enough to send a link or PM with how to post a pic here. I did search a few times and the search engine here is...NOT GOOD! I looked for a sticky and didn't see one either.

I wish I knew more about the test referenced in their warranty. Seems like a set of minimum, generic performance standards and not OEM specific?

Purolator warrants its automotive filters to be free from defects in material and workmanship.
Purolator automotive filters are manufactured to high quality standards and guaranteed to meet
fit, form and function in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) test procedures
.

Purolator Warranty

I have the same question, OEM or SAE/ISO? As we see, filters can have widely varying filtration efficiency. One could guess OEM's only specify minimum filtration efficiency and pressure drop performance specs (including bypass pressure). Motorking would know.

From Pur's Warranty: "If Purolator further determines, in its sole discretion, that the alleged defective Filter caused engine damage during the Warranty Period, Purolator will also repair or replace any damaged engine parts."

Note "sole discretion" will mean they can conclude that chunk of metal that passed thru the hole in their filter was another un-related engine failure. Wanna bet they have never replaced an engine?

Sure, but I'd also bet that Fram, XOM, SOPUS, Ashland and Amsoil, just to name a few with similar warranties, don't have to budget a whole lot for new engines for customers either.

I'd love to know what the actual engine replacements have been for all the companies you mention. Not many probably. Even if you ruin a crankshaft journal bearing those companies could always return a verdict of "Well, we think it wasn't the oil/filter that did it."

...and, they'd almost always be right.
Outright engine failures caused by an oil claiming to meet the required spec must be almost non-existent.
I've heard of oil filter media disintegrating and being pumped through the oilways and returns, stopping the flow of oil and killing the engine, but I've never actually seen it.

You didn't quite quote the whole Purolator statement, which is:

-------------------------------------------------------
"Purolator PureONE oil filters should be replaced every 3,000 miles or 3 months depending on the driving conditions - or unless otherwise specified by the vehicle's manufacturer."
-------------------------------------------------------

The part in red means that if the vehicle manufacture says to change the oil filter every 7500 miles then Purolator saying their filter will accommodate that requirement.

Ah you are correct. My apologies. The full site viewed from a mobile device separated that part and placed it in another spot.

On a side note, nobody has answered my first question. Any tears on the synthetic version?

None reported, and doubt the full synthetic will ever show tears.

I'll be cutting one open when I do my next oil change on the Acura. Depending on whether I get it running 100% again, it'll probably be this fall.

No tears in any of my purolator synthetics and I've run some crazy miles on them.

It's wire mesh backed media. Doubt it would tear in transverse shear like the pure ones. I would say the weakest point on the media would be the seams but out of the half dozen filters I've cut I've seen zero issues with the puro synth.
