anyone in OC (so cal) want to cut this open for me? 6000 miles on the filter off a 2018 forester w/ 0w20.
Or tips on how to cut open a filter without doing too much damage :)

I prefer to use a filter cutter because you get a clean cut in a short amount of time. However, I have seen people use a hack saw with good results. They cut along the seam at the base plate. It helps if you have a vice to hold the filter steady.

Do you or does your buddy have a good tin snips? Simply cut through the seam, then cut around the circumference of the filter, just snipping off the seam. The base plate separates from the can and there are no metal filings in the media like a hacksaw gives you.

I saw the YouTube video regarding the tinsnips. I have a pair of tinsnips but they seem to do more damage and I was never able to open up the filter. In fact, I threw the tinsnips away probably should get a better pair.

I've used a grinder before. It's not as clean as a filter cutter but it gets the job done. Be sure to recognize particles produced in the cutting process vs particles produced by the engine and caught in the filter.
